Je werkzaamheden bestaan uit instrumenteren en omlopen en de rol die je hebt wisselt per operatie. Bij het instrumenteren assisteer je de chirurg tijdens de operatie en bij het omlopen ben je de schakel tussen het steriele deel en het niet steriele deel van de operatiekamer. Je werkt samen met verschillende collega's, waaronder anesthesiologen (in opleiding), chirurgen, anesthesiemedewerkers (in opleiding), coassistenen en collega operatieassistenten. Het UMCG is een opleidingsziekenhuis en dat betekent dat het begeleiden van leerlingen, stagiairs en bezoekers ook onderdeel is van je werkzaamheden. "Het werk als operatieassistent is heel divers en geen dag is hetzelfde. Je werkt iedere dag met andere collega's en bij diverse operaties. Dat maakt iedere dag weer een uitdaging." Je start met laag complexe ingrepen en uiteindelijk wordt je een volwaardig lid van het operatieteam, waarbij je ook werkt tijdens hoog complexe ingrepen.
