Werk jij graag aan ziekten die een bedreiging vormen voor de wereldbevolking? En wil je bijdragen aan oplossingen voor de mens door middel van gedegen biomedisch onderzoek? Help dan mee een van de grootste mysteries van malaria te ontrafelen. Het Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC) is op zoek naar een ambitieuze en zeer gemotiveerde Postdoctoraal Onderzoeker voor het door de ERC Synergy gefinancierde project Host4Hypnozoites, gericht op de ontwikkeling van geavanceerde beeldvormingstechnologieën om slapende malariaparasieten in vivo te bestuderen. Dit project combineert: - moleculaire beeldvorming - PET-CT - parasitologie - tracerontwikkeling - beeldgeleide biopten - ruimtelijke biologie - translationeel onderzoek naar infectieziekten De postdoc zal een centrale rol spelen bij de ontwikkeling en toepassing van innovatieve beeldvormingsmethoden om leverstadia van de malariaparasiet (hypnozoïeten) voor het eerst in vivo te visualiseren, kwantificeren en isoleren. Achtergrond Malaria veroorzaakt door Plasmodium vivax vormt nog altijd een grote wereldwijde gezondheidslast. Een belangrijke uitdaging bij het elimineren van deze parasiet is de aanwezigheid van slapende leverstadia - hypnozoïeten - die weken tot maanden na infectie opnieuw actief kunnen worden en terugkerende infecties kunnen veroorzaken. Ondanks hun grote belang zijn hypnozoïeten nog slecht begrepen, omdat ze zeldzaam, moeilijk toegankelijk en lastig in vivo te bestuderen zijn.
