Are you an accurate and enthusiastic research technician who enjoys working with human biological samples? Join our biobank team and contribute to cutting-edge research into metabolic syndrome and chronic disease prevention. Within the department of Molecular Cell Biology & Immunology at Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, we are looking for a research technician to support biobanking activities and research within the recently awarded NWA-ORC project Decoding immune-metabolic homeostasis to better understand chronic diseases (META-IMMUNOTYPES). Metabolic syndrome is a major health problem, affecting up to 40% of the population. It increases the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and cancer. The META-IMMUNOTYPES consortium studies the complex interaction between the immune system and metabolism in metabolic syndrome and related conditions. By identifying early warning signals, such as hidden inflammation, through simple blood tests and advanced technology, the project aims to shift the focus from treatment to prevention. This could enable lifestyle interventions before symptoms arise. As a research technician, you play a central role in the day-to-day management of our biobank. You are responsible for the accurate collection, processing, registration, storage and distribution of human biological samples, mainly blood. You help ensure that samples and associated data are handled according to established protocols and quality standards. You work closely with researchers, PhD candidates, clinicians and laboratory staff. Besides daily biobanking activities, you contribute to improving workflows, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory processes within ongoing research projects. Your main activities include: Receiving, processing, registering, storing and retrieving human biological samples, mainly blood. Maintaining accurate sample records, traceability and an organized sample inventory in the biobank database.
Preparing samples for research projects and coordinating sample logistics with researchers, clinical departments and other collaborators. Writing, maintaining and improving SOPs and other biobank documentation, while contributing to quality control and continuous improvement. Supporting general laboratory organization and, where relevant, experimental work within ongoing research projects. We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who enjoys working accurately and systematically. You take responsibility for maintaining a reliable, high-quality biobank and enjoy working in a multidisciplinary research environment. You have: A completed MBO or HBO laboratory education, HLO degree, or an equivalent qualification in biomedical sciences, life sciences or a related field. Experience with laboratory work, preferably with processing human biological material. An accurate, structured and reliable way of working, with good organizational skills and attention to detail. Affinity with sample administration, documentation and working according to quality-controlled procedures. The ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, with good communication skills in English and/or Dutch. Experience with biobanking, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), electronic lab notebooks, SOPs or quality management systems is an advantage. A flying start to your career in scientific research. Plenty of room for your drive to shape tomorrow's healthcare. Working on large-scale and in-house research, with motivated colleagues from all over the world. You will be employed by Amsterdam UMC Research BV. A contract for 12 months, with the intention to extend for a total of 3 years. Classification in salary scale 7M: € 3.171 to € 4.492 gross for full-time employment (depending on experience).
