The posting

Voor de unit Materials & Chemistry (ca. 300 medewerkers) zoeken we een Unit Directeur die de strategische groei en impact van de unit verder vormgeeft. De unit is actief op het kruispunt van circulariteit en duurzame industrie, met onderzoek en innovatie rond kritieke en strategische grondstoffen, CO₂-arme bouwmaterialen, plasticsrecyclage en bio-economie, Power2molecules, CCUS en procesefficiëntie.

We zoeken een visionair en resultaatgericht leider die wetenschappelijke topkwaliteit weet om te zetten in industriële toepassingen, schaalbare oplossingen en systeemimpact over de volledige waardeketen. De Unit Director versterkt de strategische positionering van de unit, bouwt sterke ecosystemen met industrie en stakeholders en leidt een multidisciplinair team naar duurzame groei en maatschappelijke impact.

Als lid van het directieteam van VITO rapporteer je aan de CEO en speel je een bepalende rol in de verdere positionering van VITO als Europese referentie voor industriële innovatie met maatschappelijke en economische impact, waarbij strategische autonomie en duurzaamheid centraal staan.

Functieomschrijving

Als Unit Directeur Materials & Chemistry ben je eindverantwoordelijk voor de strategische uitbouw, prestaties en groei van de unit, volledig in lijn met de VITO-strategie om valorisatie van top cleantech innovatie richting industrie en strategische autonomie te versnellen.

  • Leiderschap, organisatie en transformatie
  • Operationeel en risicobeheer

Profiel We zoeken een ervaren, ondernemend en inspirerend leider die strategisch denkt, extern (bij voorkeur internationaal) sterk gepositioneerd is en intern zowel verandering kan realiseren als ook stabiliteit kan brengen tijdens de transformatie.

Je brengt mee:

  • Ruime leiderschapservaring op directie- of senior managementniveau, bij voorkeur in een industriële, technologische of R&D-intensieve context.
  • Een sterk en actief internationaal netwerk, vooral in de private sector (chemische en non-ferro industrie, technologie, investeringen), aangevuld met relevante contacten op Vlaams en Europees niveau.
  • Master of doctoraats opleiding als ingenieur, wetenschapper of gelijkwaardig
  • Strategisch inzicht in thema’s zoals cleantech, circulariteit, materialen, chemie en industriële transitie. Academische ervaring is een pluspunt
  • Vermogen om complexe ecosystemen te verbinden en stakeholders te aligneren rond een gedeelde ambitie.
  • Vlot in Engels en Nederlands, andere talen zijn een pluspunt.

Aantoonbare ervaring met:

  • Valorisatie van onderzoek en technologie, inclusief optimale valorisatie van IP
  • Opschaling en derisking van innovaties richting industrie
  • Publiek-private samenwerkingen

Je bent:

  • Een visionair leider die richting geeft én resultaten realiseert.
  • Een bruggenbouwer die wetenschap, industrie en beleid met elkaar verbindt.
  • Impactgedreven, ondernemend en besluitvaardig.
  • Een sterke communicator die anderen vlot weet te overtuigen.
