With over 1,400 team members, we care for more than 100,000 people across all 50 states.

Job Details

AnewHealth is seeking a mid-level Software Engineer to develop and maintain software on our existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform using Ruby. This role will make changes to the platform across both front-end and back-end layers, balancing defect resolution with new feature development in an agile environment. The ideal candidate has strong SQL skills, is comfortable working within a mature, mission-critical codebase, and brings prior exposure to development in a healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Platform Development — Design, develop, and maintain features on the existing EHR platform using Ruby (Ruby on Rails), working across both front-end and back-end layers of the application.
  • Build and modify user-facing views and interactions on the front end, and implement business logic, services, and data access on the back end.
  • Defect Resolution — Triage, debug, and resolve defects in the production EHR application, performing root-cause analysis and delivering durable fixes.
  • New Feature Development — Design and build new features and enhancements within the existing platform architecture, from requirements through implementation and testing.
  • Data & SQL — Write, optimize, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries against the platform's relational database(s), including work involving clinical and patient-related data structures.
  • Agile Delivery — Participate in sprint planning, daily standups, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Commit to and deliver against sprint timelines, collaborating closely with product owners, QA, and other engineers on the team.
  • Quality & Compliance — Write and maintain automated tests, participate in code reviews, and follow secure coding practices appropriate for a system handling protected health information (PHI).
  • AI-Enabled Development — Use AI tools to accelerate technical documentation, generate and refactor code, build supporting resources (test data, scripts, diagrams), and assist with code execution and validation, while ensuring appropriate review of AI-assisted output.

Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience using Ruby, preferably Ruby on Rails.
  • Demonstrated full-stack experience, including front-end development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Rails view/UI technologies) and back-end development (Rails, ActiveRecord, service/business logic layers).
  • Strong SQL skills, including writing complex queries, query optimization, and working with relational database schemas (e.g., PostgreSQL or MySQL).
  • Experience resolving defects in a live, production application and performing root-cause analysis.
  • Experience developing new features within an existing, mature codebase.
  • Exposure to software development in a healthcare environment, ideally involving an EHR or other clinical system.
  • Working experience in an agile/scrum environment, including familiarity with tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks (e.g., RSpec, Capybara) and Git-based version control.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar) for documentation acceleration, resource development, and code execution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across a cross-functional team.

Requirements

  • Direct experience working on or supporting an EHR platform (proprietary or commercial, e.g., Epic, Cerner, athenahealth, or similar).
  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7 or FHIR.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and PHI handling requirements.
  • Exposure to pharmacy or other clinical workflows.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern front-end frameworks or Rails tooling (e.g., Turbo, Stimulus, React).

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
