AI/ML Software Engineer Fairbanks Morse Technology | Beloit, WI Build Intelligent Technology. Solve Real-World Challenges. Make an Impact. What if the AI you build could help predict equipment failures before they happen, uncover the root cause of complex problems, and help keep U.S. Navy ships mission-ready? At Fairbanks Morse Technology, part of Fairbanks Morse Defense, we're developing advanced technology solutions that bring together artificial intelligence, machine learning, software engineering, automation, and Industrial IoT. We're looking for an AI/ML Software Engineer who wants to turn innovative ideas into production-ready products that solve meaningful, real-world problems. This is an opportunity to do more than build models or write code. You'll take ownership of the full development lifecycle—from understanding customer challenges and designing solutions to building applications, deploying machine learning capabilities, and connecting insights to actionable outcomes. Your work will help advance predictive maintenance, equipment health monitoring, anomaly detection, and root-cause analysis, beginning with U.S. Navy shipboard equipment. You'll help shape solutions designed to scale across equipment platforms, customers, and future applications. If you enjoy solving complex problems, building complete products, and seeing your work move from concept to real-world use, we'd like to meet you. What You'll Build and Accomplish
Turn ideas into working products. Partner with customers, engineers, and stakeholders to understand their needs, define requirements, and translate them into practical technical solutions.
Own the full software development lifecycle. Design and build complete applications spanning backend services, APIs, data pipelines, databases, and user interfaces.
Make equipment smarter. Develop and deploy machine learning solutions for predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, time-series analysis, and root-cause identification.
Connect intelligence to action. Build workflows that turn insights into recommended maintenance, work orders, guided troubleshooting, or automated responses.
Design for scale and reuse. Create modular, maintainable software architectures that can expand to new equipment, customers, and applications without starting over.
Bring AI closer to the equipment. Integrate software with sensors, controllers, industrial data systems, and third-party platforms, including environments that operate without continuous network connectivity.
Build with AI, responsibly. Use AI-powered coding assistants to accelerate development while maintaining strong standards for code quality, testing, security, and data protection.
Deliver secure, dependable solutions. Incorporate cybersecurity, automated testing, documentation, and CI/CD practices throughout development, including applicable NIST, STIG, and Risk Management Framework requirements.
Own the outcome. Demonstrate working solutions, communicate technical trade-offs, and keep customers and leadership informed as products evolve.
What You'll Bring We're looking for an engineer who combines strong software development fundamentals with hands-on machine learning experience and the ability to take a product from an initial idea to a working solution. Required qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Five or more years of professional software development experience, including delivering complete applications from requirements through deployment.
Demonstrated ability to turn ambiguous customer needs into clearly defined requirements and tested, working software.
Strong Python development skills and proficiency in at least one additional language, such as C#, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, or C++.
Experience building REST APIs, data pipelines, databases, and web-based user interfaces.
Hands-on experience applying machine learning in production, such as anomaly detection, classification, or time-series analysis, using frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
Experience using AI coding assistants effectively, with sound judgment around testing, code review, and protection of sensitive information.
Familiarity with Git, CI/CD, Docker, and a major cloud platform; Azure experience is preferred.
Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions to customers, engineers, and business leaders.
Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
Skills That Will Set You Apart You don't need to have worked in every one of these areas. Experience in one or more can help you make an immediate impact.
Predictive maintenance, condition-based maintenance (CBM+), prognostics, or equipment health monitoring.
Large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or agentic AI workflows.
Industrial automation, sensor data, PLCs, OPC UA, Modbus, MQTT, or other industrial communication protocols.
U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, or other defense-related technology programs.
Secure cloud development, Azure Government Cloud, cybersecurity compliance, NIST, STIG, or RMF.
Edge computing, embedded systems, or deploying software in disconnected environments.
Cross-platform mobile development, including .NET MAUI.
Why Fairbanks Morse Technology? Build technology with a purpose. Contribute to solutions that support the reliability and readiness of U.S. Navy equipment and other critical applications. Own more than a piece of the project. Work across requirements, architecture, application development, machine learning, testing, and deployment. Solve challenging engineering problems. Bring together software, AI, industrial systems, and equipment data in environments where reliability and security matter. See your work come to life. Develop practical products that move beyond prototypes and connect machine intelligence with real operational needs. Help shape what's next. Contribute to an evolving technology organization focused on AI, automation, smart engineering, and advanced IoT solutions. Important Employment Requirement This position requires access or potential access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NOFORN). To meet this requirement, candidates must provide acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship and attest that they do not hold dual citizenship. Acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship includes a U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, or naturalization certificate. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Beloit, Wisconsin.
