Role Summary

The Lead Maintenance Technician serves as the working technical lead for the maintenance team on shift, combining hands-on equipment maintenance with team coordination, task delegation, and shift-level oversight. This role is the primary point of escalation for technicians during the shift and works closely with the Facilities Supervisor or Manager to ensure preventive and corrective maintenance programs are executed on time and to standard. The Lead Technician is expected to model best practices in safety, workmanship, and documentation while driving accountability and productivity across the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform the full scope of maintenance technician duties, including PM completion, equipment repair, and facility upkeep (see Maintenance Technician job description for full task detail)
  • Serve as the shift-level lead; assign, prioritize, and delegate work orders and PM tasks to technicians based on skill level, urgency, and operational impact
  • Conduct shift start-up and handoff meetings, communicating open work orders, equipment status, and safety concerns to incoming and outgoing teams
  • Provide real-time technical guidance and troubleshooting support to technicians; serve as the first escalation point for complex or unresolved maintenance issues
  • Monitor shift performance against planned PM completion rates, mean time to repair (MTTR), and wrench-time targets; report variances to the Facilities Manager
  • Review and approve completed work orders for accuracy, parts usage, and compliance with maintenance standards before closure in the CMMS
  • Identify skills gaps within the team and provide on-the-job coaching, training, and mentorship to technicians
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with operations supervisors to minimize equipment downtime impact on fulfillment throughput and SLAs
  • Enforce all safety policies including LOTO, confined space, hot work permits, and PPE compliance; immediately address unsafe conditions or behaviors
  • Assist in spare parts inventory management, including cycle counts, reorder recommendations, and proper storage practices
  • Support root cause analysis (RCA) for repeat failures or critical equipment events; contribute to corrective action plans
  • Assist the Facilities Manager with technician performance feedback, shift scheduling input, and continuous improvement projects
  • Lead or participate in equipment commissioning, capital project support, and vendor coordination as directed

Qualifications

  • 4–7 years of progressive maintenance experience in a warehouse, fulfillment, or industrial environment, with at least 1–2 years in a lead, senior, or training capacity
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems; PLC experience (Allen-Bradley, Siemens) strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage a team workload, and adapt to shifting operational priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in CMMS platforms; experience generating maintenance reports and tracking KPIs (PM completion rate, MTTR, equipment availability)
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and interpersonal skills; ability to hold team members accountable while fostering a collaborative shift culture
  • OSHA 30 certification required (or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire); additional safety certifications (NFPA 70E, forklift train-the-trainer) a plus
  • Experience conducting or contributing to root cause analysis (RCA) and reliability improvement initiatives preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret complex schematics, P&IDs, and OEM documentation
  • Physical ability to perform the full range of maintenance technician duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs, working at heights, and operating in varying temperature environments
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for shift reporting, escalation, and cross-functional coordination

Working Conditions

Based in a fulfillment or vault facility operating on a 24/7 schedule. Shift assignment aligns with operational coverage needs. Exposure to varying temperatures, noise, and physical demands typical of a warehouse/industrial environment. PPE required at all times in operational areas. May be required to respond to critical equipment failures outside of scheduled shift hours.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
