Job Description
The HVAC III technician leads complex HVAC installations, service projects, and system upgrades while providing technical leadership within the department. This position oversees and trains junior technicians, performs advanced diagnostics on electrical, control, refrigerant, and integrated building systems, and ensures compliance with EPA, OSHA, and local code requirements. The role includes resolving escalated service issues, optimizing system performance, participating in project planning, and contributing solutions that improve reliability, energy efficiency, and operational continuity.
Responsibilities
- Lead advanced HVAC installations, system upgrades, commissioning, and major repairs
- Perform complex diagnostics involving electrical systems, controls, refrigerant circuits, and building automation integration
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to HVAC 1 and 2 technicians
- Ensure compliance with EPA, OSHA, joint commission, and hospital regulatory standards
- Participate in planning and design review for capital or renovation projects
- Maintain detailed documentation, assist with budgeting, and support departmental operations
Qualifications
Experience: 5 years HVAC
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent and Specialized high school vocational program, community college or apprenticeship
Certification:
ASSE: 12010 Infection Control Certification for construction and maintenance personnel
ASHE Healthcare Physical Environment worker
EPA 608 Flammable, advanced refrigerant training (R-410A, R-32, A2L)
Building Automation/Controls training
Skills & Abilities:
Expert HVAC diagnostic and repair skills Ability to lead technicians and assign/supervise work Strong understanding of hospital ventilation codes, infection‑control standards, and critical environment requirements Ability to read, interpret, and execute complex technical documentation Strong project coordination and planning capability Ability to perform advanced troubleshooting on integrated building systems Excellent communication and mentoring skills
