The posting

Tech Lead / Engineering Manager

At Fortune Media, we are reinventing how a storied brand, steeped in journalism and business, adapts to today’s digital-first world. The digital transformation of Fortune from a print magazine to a multi-channel media company is in full swing, and we want you to be a part of it. The Engineering team works on multiple digital properties at Fortune: from the editorial website, conferences, Fortune Recommends and others. Our goal is to launch new products to build on our core competencies of content, events and education, in order to diversify our revenue streams; and to improve the experience and monetization of existing properties.

Fortune Media is seeking a highly motivated and talented Tech Lead/Engineering Manager (Hybrid Role) to join our team. This exciting position offers a unique opportunity to combine strong hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, leading high-impact projects while simultaneously mentoring and developing a team of engineers.

AI-Powered Development We are embracing AI to significantly increase our engineering team's productivity and to fundamentally change how we build applications. You will use AI-powered tools such as Cursor and Claude to accelerate your work, enabling you to:

  • Work faster across the Cursor ecosystem, including sub-agents, the CLI, MCP connectors, the integrated browser, connected enterprise applications, cloud agents, vulnerability scanning, and Bugbot.
  • Build standalone prototypes, applications, and internal tools for engineering, editorial, conferences, and sales that raise productivity or drive revenue in days rather than weeks.
  • Move quickly from design to functional code when prototyping new features.

Our goal is not incremental improvement but a step change in productivity, freeing engineers to spend more time on complex system design, business logic, and creative problem-solving. We expect you to stay at the forefront of AI-enabled development.

We also expect strong non-technical skills: product and business understanding, analytical thinking, and a working grasp of design principles. We want engineers who partner seamlessly with product and design, and who can use AI tools to make sound product and design judgments when those resources are limited. This full skill set is what we are looking for, and we will coach and train you if you are interested in building it. Senior and lead engineers are especially encouraged to grow in this area.

Responsibilities

As a Tech Lead / Engineering Manager, you will:

  • Lead and mentor junior engineers: Guide and mentor junior team members on best practices, code quality, and professional development.
  • Conduct performance reviews: Provide constructive feedback, set performance goals, and guide career development for team members.
  • Drive technical excellence: Champion high-quality software development practices, including code reviews, testing, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD).
  • Lead large-scale projects: Take ownership of complex projects, defining technical roadmaps, and leading cross-functional teams to successful delivery.
  • Revenue-focused development: Align engineering efforts with business goals, focusing on projects that deliver measurable ROI and drive revenue growth.
  • Data-driven decision making: Leverage data and analytics to inform technical decisions, track project progress, and measure the impact of engineering initiatives.
  • Contribute to the design and architecture of scalable and maintainable software systems.
  • Maintain a strong individual contributor role: Continue to actively participate in coding, design, and implementation of key software components.

Required Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern front-end frameworks (e.g., Next.js, React, Angular)
  • Experience with backend technologies (e.g., Node.js, Python, Java)
  • Familiarity with Content Management Systems (CMS) and their integrations
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles (e.g., design patterns, object-oriented programming)
  • Proven experience leading and mentoring junior engineers
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience with agile development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with data analysis and visualization tools
  • Experience with project management tools (Jira, Asana)
  • Contributions to open-source projects

We will tailor the specific level of this role (e.g., Lead, Principle, Senior Principle, Manager, Senior Manager) based on years of relevant experience, your demonstrated technical expertise, experience with large-scale system design, leadership qualities, and communication skills as assessed during the interview process.

A few of Fortune’s perks and benefits:

  • 22 vacation days, 11 paid holidays, and an honor-based sick leave policy
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage (90% paid for individuals and families)
  • 401(k) plan with employer contributions
  • Generous parental leave
  • Dependent care/health care/commuter FSAs, and cell phone benefits
  • Tuition reimbursement program
  • A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work culture

If you are a passionate software engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is eager to contribute to the future of digital media, we encourage you to apply!

Total Compensation Ranges (base salary & bonus):

Your title will be the technical engineering manager. Salary range will be $115,000.00 - $199,000.00 plus 15% of a discretionary annual Bonus

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
