JOB DESCRIPTION

The Systems Engineer is an individual contributor on the Digital Newsroom (DNR) Systems Administration team responsible for the engineering, automation, and operational reliability of the Dalet media-asset-management platform and related production systems in New York and Washington, DC. This backfill position replaces a retiring engineer and restores capacity for scripting, proactive monitoring, data migration, and frontline production support across NY and DC.

The Systems Engineer works closely with editorial, media desk, library, and operations teams, partners with Dalet support and internal engineering groups on Mimir, Pyramid, and Project Fresh Start initiatives, and contributes to the team's transition from reactive ticket handling to automated detection and remediation. Success requires strong Dalet platform knowledge, disciplined scripting in PowerShell and Bash, and dependable ownership through completion — including weekends and live production windows.

A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Dalet Platform Engineering & AdministrationAdminister and troubleshoot the Dalet MAM environment in NY and DC — including Dalet Admin Tool configuration, BPM workflows, proxy generation, WebSpace, Wowza load balancers, workflow servers, and ingest/recording components (Brio). Resolve escalated production issues: proxy-not-generating failures, media sync problems, ZID-to-DCID transfer errors, mount failures, TRINT workflow disruption, and slug/metadata special-character recording failures. Configure Dalet Admin Tool settings and BPM rules to prevent recurring operational failures (e.g., illegal-character handling, recording-stuck conditions). Support restricted-folder lifecycle, asset restore/purge requests, and media-desk coordination for NY and DC editorial workflows. Partner with Dalet iCare/support on complex escalations; document root cause and remediation in ServiceNow (DNRNYD) and Confluence.
  • Monitoring, Scripting & AutomationDevelop, maintain, and extend production monitoring and remediation scripts (PowerShell and Bash) covering recurring Dalet failure modes — Brio recording stuck, MDS/MDD agent health, AuditTrail freshness, BPM thresholds, NetXchange agents, WebSpace/Wowza restarts, send-to-NEXIO catchers, EDL agent errors, and DST offset checks. Tie monitoring automation to tracked DNRNYD tickets with documented thresholds, alert logic, and remediation steps. Contribute to the team's proactive monitoring posture and eventual integration with broader observability initiatives (e.g., Grafana). Apply Python and modern tooling to extend operational automation where practical.
  • Mimir, Migrations & Platform ProgramsSupport Object Store-to-Mimir image and metadata migration work — including XML mappings, JSON watch-folder definitions, VOS re-tagging, shared-asset import logic, and batch validation. Execute and validate large-scale content and metadata migrations (e.g., transcript backfill, person/non-person image regeneration) with minimal production impact. Participate in Mimir Phase 2 and Pyramid platform testing — TestRail case authoring, post-upgrade retesting in DEV and PROD, and permissions/workflow validation with platform owners. Support Project Fresh Start and Dalet upgrade activities (MFP testing, MS-SQL maintenance, version upgrades) as assigned.
  • Production Pipelines & Linux AdministrationOwn or support recurring production delivery workflows — including the Fox News Sunday Hulu unified-delivery package (format updates, captioning conversions, container changes, illegal-character handling, and external QA coordination). Administer Linux systems supporting Dalet and related DNR infrastructure in NY and DC. Perform MS-SQL queries and data tasks tied to Dalet metadata, migration, and reporting workflows. Transform and validate XML metadata for ingest, migration, and platform-integration use cases.
  • Operations, Documentation & CollaborationProvide frontline and weekend production support for NY and DC Dalet users — editors, media desk, library, and operations teams. Respond to ServiceNow incidents and requests; maintain clear written documentation in Confluence for systems, scripts, and troubleshooting procedures. Collaborate with peer DNR engineers (Mimir, Pyramid, ingest, editing platform) and BMT teams on cross-platform initiatives. Participate in on-call and weekend coverage rotation aligned to live news production schedules. Work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and maintenance windows as required.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3–5+ years of systems engineering, Linux administration, or broadcast/media platform support experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Dalet Galaxy / Dalet Plus or comparable MAM platforms strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell and Bash scripting; ability to build and maintain production monitoring automation.
  • Working knowledge of Linux administration, MS-SQL, XML/metadata workflows, and basic networking.
  • Experience supporting live production or newsroom editorial environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and ownership through completion.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; comfortable partnering with vendors, editorial staff, and engineering teams.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
