Commercial FP&A Intern – (Summer)

Department: Commercial Finance Reports To: Manager, Commercial FP&A

Role Type: Full-Time Internship (Summer)

Job Summary

The Commercial FP&A Intern is a key analytical resource within the GAF Finance team focused on comprehensive financial analysis, data visualization, and financial modeling for the Commercial Roofing business segment.

Reporting to the Commercial FP&A leadership, this role provides hands-on exposure to corporate finance, commercial strategy, and business planning. The ideal candidate pairs strong data intellectual curiosity—a natural drive to dig into raw metrics, ask "why," and uncover underlying business trends—with practical experience in financial modeling to deliver actionable, visual insights to cross-functional stakeholders.

Essential Duties

Financial Modeling & Strategic Analysis

  • P&L & Margin Modeling: Support comprehensive financial analysis of the Commercial Roofing P&L, building and refining financial models to evaluate pricing, volume mix, raw material costs, and manufacturing/distribution impacts.
  • Forecasting & Planning: Assist in the annual planning process and forward-looking forecasts. Utilize financial models to project business impacts, mitigate risks, and highlight value-creation opportunities.
  • Deep-Dive Analytics: Conduct root-cause analysis on sales, profitability trends, and pricing variances to provide actionable insights for the commercial business.

Data Visualization & Operational Intelligence

  • Dashboarding: Act as a data visualization champion by utilizing Tableau and Excel to transform complex, multi-source financial data into automated, interactive dashboards for leadership and the field sales team.
  • KPI Tracking: Monitor commercial performance metrics and KPIs, synthesizing massive datasets into real-time visibility for pricing execution and sales growth strategies.
  • Storytelling with Data: Demonstrate the ability to simplify complex financial models and narratives for non-financial stakeholders, effectively influencing cross-functional leaders to take action based on visual data.

Data Intellectual Curiosity & Process Architecture

  • Proactive Exploration: Apply data intellectual curiosity to proactively audit commercial data streams (e.g., Salesforce, ERP systems), identifying anomalies and new sources of data needed for decision-making.
  • Process Improvement: Assist in creating procedures to enhance the efficient collection and organization of data across the Commercial function, streamlining weekly and monthly sales reporting routines.
  • System Troubleshooting: Gain an understanding of the organization’s reporting mechanisms, helping to troubleshoot data discrepancies and suggesting areas for system and workflow improvement.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Business Analytics, Economics, Accounting, or a related quantitative discipline (rising Junior, Senior, or Graduate student).

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Financial Modeling: Foundational knowledge of corporate financial analysis, financial statement modeling, and advanced analytical concepts.
  • Data Visualization: Hands-on coursework, academic projects, or prior internship experience creating, customizing, and maintaining dashboards is highly desired.

Core Competencies & Behavioral Traits

  • Data Intellectual Curiosity: An innate desire to look beyond surface numbers, test hypotheses, and solve complex business puzzles.
  • Advanced Problem Solving: Demonstrated forward-thinking, creativity, and the ability to break down multi-faceted challenges.
  • Meticulous Attention to Detail: High standard for data accuracy with success in meeting deadlines under pressure.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
