About The Opportunity

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our market-leading Residential Development Unit, working closely with a Partner and Legal Director on a broad range of residential development matters for national and regional housebuilder clients. The role would suit a motivated and ambitious individual looking to develop their legal career within a supportive, high-performing team.

You will gain exposure to complex and varied work from the outset, supporting developers on projects that help deliver new housing across England and Wales. Working alongside experienced lawyers, you will receive structured training and development while progressively taking on greater responsibility as your knowledge and confidence grow.

Initially, responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Preparing and submitting HM Land Registry applications and SDLT returns.
  • Assisting with title investigations, searches and due diligence exercises.
  • Undertaking legal research and preparing supporting documentation for transactions.
  • Managing transactional and procedural workstreams under supervision.
  • Supporting development site completions and post-completion matters.
  • Assisting with planning, infrastructure and development-related documentation.
  • Running data rooms and coordinating information across local and national project teams.
  • Liaising directly with clients, local authorities and third parties.
  • Providing support on major residential development transactions and strategic projects.

As your experience develops, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of increasingly complex matters, building the technical and commercial skills required to progress your career within one of the UK's leading residential development teams. Candidates will benefit from direct exposure to high-quality work, strong supervision, significant client contact and excellent development opportunities.

This role is based in Birmingham and requires regular collaboration with colleagues and clients, with an expectation of hybrid working with office attendance 3 days per week.

The team

We are the leading residential development and urban regeneration legal team in the country acting for 18 of the top 20 UK housebuilders, institutional landowners such as Oxford University and other large-scale sector participants.

We advise over the complete life cycle of new build housing from initial heads of terms, acquiring the land, obtaining planning permission, building out the scheme and the sale of the new homes. Schemes range from local developments of 50 new homes up to 20,000 unit green field urban extensions and multi-billion pound urban regeneration schemes in central London. We also advise our PLC clients at Group level on national issues such as cladding remediation post-Grenfell and Competition and Markets Authority investigations.

The team, which is over 240 strong and is based in 8 of our offices across England, operates within Gateley Plc's Property Platform. This Platform comprises over 700 lawyers, surveyors, engineers, architects, accountants and support staff who provide a unique cross-disciplinary service delivery to out wider property client base.

Part of the team's is the sale of the new homes once built. These sales, which total approximately 15,000 plots and £3 billion in revenue each year, are handled by the Plot Sales team out of three regional hubs using highly developed IT processes and automation.

The person

Personality fit is absolutely key in this role, and our successful candidate will be a personable, enthusiastic and confident individual with excellent client management skills. They will have completed a degree (not necessarily a law degree). They may also have completed or be working towards the SQE, LPC or equivalent legal qualification, although this is not a pre-requisite. Strong academics, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to build a career within residential development are more important than previous experience in the sector.

Candidates will be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Excellent commercial acumen
  • Great communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Commitment to forging strong working relationships with our clients
  • Ability and willingness to learn
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify those areas where they need to seek help or advice from colleagues
  • An organised, methodical and proactive approach in managing time, work priorities and deadlines
  • A strong team working ethic
  • Good IT skills, ideally including previous experience of working with a case management system
  • Discretion and professionalism at all times
  • Calum under pressure and able to operate efficiently in a fast-paced and demanding working environment
  • Ability to proactively chase matters when required and regularly report (externally to the clients and internally for management purposes) to ensure that the client is always updated
  • Demonstrate quick response times

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
