The posting

Discord has a highly engaged community of millions of daily active users who use the platform for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does: play video games. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming, and we are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to hang out before, during, and after playing games.

Our mission on the Developer Platform team is to help game studios succeed by creating meaningful experiences for players. As a B2B2C (business-to-business-to-consumer) team, we serve two key audiences. For game studios, we build smart integrations and intuitive tools that make it easy for developers and community managers to connect with players and bring the best of Discord into their games. For players, we enhance on-platform experiences that deepen their connection to the games they love and make it easier to build lasting friendships through play, which ties directly to Discord's mission of helping people find belonging.

You'll focus on the player-facing side of that equation: the experiences players have on Discord and in-game as a result of studio integrations. For example, you might design in-game ways to invite Discord friends to play, mobile-friendly ways to see what friends are playing right now, or new ways to bring game moments and achievements onto Discord to spark social connection. Your work will span surfaces like in-game overlays, the Discord client, and Discord mobile, wherever players discover games, make new friends, and play together.

As a product designer, you'll work across the full product development cycle, from early exploration through launch and iteration. In a given week, you might be prototyping an in-game invite flow, playtesting a mobile surface with your engineering partners, and walking the squad through your design rationale in a review. You'll bring a thoughtful mix of user empathy, systems thinking, and visual craft to solve meaningful problems for developers and players alike. If you're energized by complex challenges, passionate about games and community, and excited to help shape how studios partner with Discord, we'd love to hear from you.

This person will report to the Sr. Product Design Manager on our Developer Platform Design team.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Embed within the Player Experience squad and partner with a staff designer, engineers, product managers, and data scientists to design the player-facing side of studio integrations, from concept through launch and post-launch iteration.
  • Design player-facing features like friend invites, game presence, and shareable game moments, accounting for how developers configure and integrate them so the experience holds up across every game and platform.
  • Mix your visual, UX, and interaction design skills to solve for the constraints of both desktop and mobile surfaces, ensuring feature parity and quality.
  • Playtest your work regularly, iterating on feedback from players, peers, and leadership to reach a polished, production-ready experience.
  • Produce comprehensive design documentation and interactive prototypes, and keep them up to date as decisions evolve, so engineering and product partners can build with confidence.
  • Share work early and often in critiques and team reviews, and communicate the business and user-centered rationale behind design choices in forums such as design reviews, project-team meetings, and leadership discussions.

What you should have

  • 2+ years of experience designing and shipping a web/app product for a variety of devices and platforms.
  • Experience designing consumer-facing mobile features specifically (not just responsive web), including familiarity with mobile platform conventions and constraints (iOS/Android).
  • An ownership mindset with a bias toward action, helping to drive projects and decisions forward.
  • A high craft bar and attention to detail in user experience, visual design, interaction design, and prototyping, with proficiency in Figma and prototyping tools to demonstrate interaction, functionality, and flows.
  • Ability to communicate complex problems and experiences simply, and to know when a user journey, wireframe, deck, prototype, or design specification will be most effective in doing so.
  • Experience working within a design system, and contributing back to it.
  • Experience designing for mature products, both against a vision and through incremental improvements.

Bonus Points

  • Experience designing mobile-first experiences.
  • Casual or committed gamer, on mobile and PC.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
