Job description

General Index (GX) delivers future-proof commodity prices. Our spot prices and forward curves are calculated algorithmically based on thousands of daily trades collated from 240+ data partners, using transparent and consistent methodologies and a compliant approach. Assessing over 6,300 traded markets, built on over 1.2mn monthly trades, in crude oil, refined products, natural gas, compute, and energy transition. We democratize access to benchmarks that represent real market activity.

We’re easy to use, with hassle-free integrations and straight-forward licensing — providing more choice to the industry. Trusted by market leaders including Bloomberg, BP, ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, Two Sigma, BASF, Rio Tinto, Wood Mackenzie, and ADNOC, we’re providing the next generation of benchmark data for trading and analysis.

About the role

You will join the Data team, part of our Product team, and work closely with data colleagues in our other regions. You will lead data projects from requirements to release, support the Index team's daily price assessments, and help develop other analysts.

Key responsibilities:

Deliver data projects, from specification to release

  • Own data projects and epics: agree requirements and scope with stakeholders, choose the technical approach, and deliver on time.
  • Write clear, testable specifications before work starts, covering requirements, acceptance criteria and edge cases.
  • Build pipelines in our core system, using Python and SQL to bring new trade and pricing data into our standard format.
  • Add new datasets, learning what the market data means and building the processes that clean and validate it.
  • Automate existing pipelines and recurring tasks, and build new tools as the business grows.

Quality and operational support

  • Provide operational and QA support for daily assessment processes, and help fix operational issues.
  • Review and QA other analysts' work, and check that code and data, whether a person or an AI built them, meet the specification before release.
  • Run regular code and pipeline reviews, and help the team follow best practice.
  • Find better ways of working to make the Data team faster and more reliable.

Work closely with the Index team

  • Act as the link between the Index and Data teams, turning methodology requirements into technical solutions.
  • Help develop the assessment algorithms behind new and existing benchmarks.
  • Be the team's go-to person on commodity trading, market data and price assessment.

Develop the team

  • Mentor Data Analysts and help them with day-to-day work and harder problems.
  • Help train new analysts, and keep training materials and documentation up to date.

About you

Required experience:

  • Five or more years working with commodity, financial or other complex data.
  • Strong Python and SQL experience, including complex queries.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, Codex).
  • Experience building or maintaining data pipelines and automated processes.
  • Experience taking projects from requirements to delivery.
  • Experience reviewing others' work and giving useful technical feedback.
  • A real interest in using AI in your work.
  • Strong numerical and problem-solving skills, and close attention to detail.
  • Clear communication, including explaining technical issues to non-technical colleagues and working with global teams.

Preferred experience:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science or a related subject.
  • Knowledge of commodity markets, and the ability to learn price assessment methods quickly.
  • Experience managing, mentoring or supporting junior team members.

Job benefits

  • Competitive base salary.
  • Private health and dental insurance.
  • 401k plan.
  • Mentoring from experienced colleagues.
  • Structured development, with a track record of internal promotion.
  • A positive, high-energy culture.

Please note that this role is full time and based in Houston, TX, and would require you to be in the office Monday to Thursday. Relocation assistance is not available.

Don’t meet all the requirements? At GX we believe that professional development happens through teaching and learning from your peers and managers. Even if you’re uncertain about whether you have the experience we’re looking for, please apply if this position sparks your curiosity and you have a real interest or passion in what we are doing. Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
