About the Company

General Matter is enriching uranium in America.

Our goal is to design, build, and operate the world’s lowest-cost enrichment services in the United States.

Our mission is to restore America’s ability to produce nuclear fuel—fuel that will power AI, advanced manufacturing, critical industries, and the next generation of nuclear reactors.

Ultimately, our work will help power national ambitions and enable a high-energy society.

We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by top-tier investors. Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.

About This Role

As Facility Manager at General Matter, reporting to the Site Manager, you'll build and lead the facilities function for a roughly 87-acre industrial site in Paducah, Kentucky, that we're bringing back into service for nuclear-industry process piping and steel fabrication. The site has several manufacturing buildings plus support buildings for offices, storage, utilities and shop services. Much of its infrastructure needs to be assessed, restored and recommissioned before production can start.

Most facilities managers inherit a running plant and keep it running. This role is different: it's a start-up. You'll restore legacy power, water, compressed air, natural gas, HVAC and fire protection systems, and sequence the work so each building is ready before production or occupancy arrives. You'll also build a facilities team of about 15 people from the ground up and decide with site leadership which services stay in-house and which are contracted. Your decisions on utility capacity and building readiness will directly set how fast the site can deliver the hardware behind America's new enrichment capacity.

If you seek high impact and are excited by fast-paced, intense, Skunkworks-style projects, we encourage you to apply to join our team.

Responsibilities

Infrastructure Restoration & Capital Projects

  • Assess and restore legacy power distribution, water, compressed air, natural gas, HVAC, fire protection and building envelope across every manufacturing and support building; build and execute the infrastructure restoration plan.
  • Plan and manage facility capital projects and renovations, including the office building build-out: scope work, select and manage contractors, control budget and schedule, and close out projects.
  • Sequence work across buildings so each is ready ahead of its production or occupancy date.

Utilities, Grounds & Site Services

  • Manage utility service, metering and energy use, and coordinate with providers on capacity for production equipment, welding power and cranes.
  • Maintain roads, rail and truck access, laydown and storage yards, drainage, snow removal and the site perimeter across the property.
  • Run custodial, waste and recycling, pest control and space services across all manufacturing and support buildings.

Compliance & Nuclear Readiness

  • Keep fire protection, egress, emergency lighting and pressure systems inspected and compliant; work with EHS on permits, environmental requirements and emergency response.
  • Support site readiness for a nuclear quality and safety program (10 CFR Part 70), including controlled changes to facilities and the records that go with them.

Team, Budget & Systems

  • Recruit and develop facilities technicians and utilities, grounds and custodial staff; make in-house vs. contracted service recommendations.
  • Set up the facilities preventive maintenance and work order process in the site's maintenance management system, working closely with Maintenance on shared assets.
  • Build and manage the facilities operating budget and service contracts; track KPIs on cost, work order backlog and response time.

Basic Qualifications

  • Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to perform trade studies and make clear recommendations using first principles and engineering fundamentals, even with partial information.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, facilities management or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8+ years in facilities management for industrial or manufacturing sites, including 3+ years leading facilities teams and contractors.
  • Hands-on knowledge of industrial electrical distribution, HVAC, compressed air, water/wastewater and fire protection systems.
  • Experience restoring, renovating or recommissioning older industrial buildings or bringing a facility back into service.
  • Proven ability to manage capital projects and contractors: scope, bids, budget, schedule and closeout.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA and local building and fire code requirements.
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for work orders and PMs.
  • Must be a U.S. person, as this role requires regular access to export-controlled environments, and able to obtain and maintain the site access authorization required for the role.
  • Ability to travel up to approximately 25%, including to other company sites, suppliers and vendors, and to respond to after-hours facility emergencies.
  • Able to regularly walk multiple large buildings, roofs, utility spaces and grounds in all weather, wearing required PPE and climbing ladders, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
  • This position is based onsite in Paducah, Kentucky.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a fast-paced engineering or highly technical environment, with a resourceful approach to delivering under tight timelines or budget constraints.
  • Experience standing up a new facilities organization or opening a new or restarted site.
  • Facilities experience in a nuclear, defense, chemical or other highly regulated industrial setting.
  • Professional certification such as CFM, FMP or a PE license.
  • Experience running multi-building campuses, rail-served sites or heavy-industry yards.
  • Energy management or utility-cost reduction experience.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
