Senior Software Engineer – VEEComm

General Motors

Warren, Michigan, United States of America

Job Description

General Motors is undergoing a major transformation, both in how we operate and in how we will influence the future of transportation. Our Software Services team is on the forefront of this work, emboldening our culture by seeking out determined, innovative individuals who will join our team to help move us forward and achieve our mission.

We’re looking for an engineer who likes getting close to the metal and solving problems that only show up when software meets a real vehicle. In this role, you’ll build safety-critical software for the telematics control unit, working across embedded C++, vehicle communications, system design, integration, validation, and anomaly resolution. You’ll move between architecture discussions, deep debugging sessions, in-vehicle investigation, and supplier collaboration to ship software that has to work reliably in the real world, not just in a simulator.

What You’ll Work On

In this role, you will work on software that lives in one of the most interesting parts of the vehicle stack: where embedded systems, vehicle networking, diagnostics, cloud-connected services, and cellular/telephony behavior all collide.

You won’t just be implementing isolated features. You’ll be tracing problems across system boundaries, debugging issues that reproduce only in real vehicles, balancing reliability and performance in safety-critical code, and figuring out how hardware, firmware, network behavior, cloud services, and supplier implementations interact when things get weird.

If you enjoy deep C++ work, tough root-cause analysis, and the kind of engineering where you can feel the difference between a clean design and a fragile one, this role gives you a lot to dig into.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development of technical solutions for current, new, and major upcoming programs, including requirements specification, system decomposition, design, implementation, test strategy, and issue resolution.
  • Lead software design for the system team and drive software anomaly investigation, root cause analysis, corrective action, and verification.
  • Perform complex design analysis and make sound engineering tradeoff decisions across functionality, quality, maintainability, scalability, performance, and safety.
  • Develop embedded C++ software on a telematics unit, including safety-critical components and connected-vehicle capabilities.
  • Debug software and system behavior in vehicle, in lab, and across integration environments.
  • Work directly with suppliers to drive end-to-end ticket resolution, technical clarification, validation follow-through, and closure of field or integration issues.
  • Provide, communicate, and reinforce common software engineering best practices across the development community.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for at least one platform area, subsystem, or application component.
  • Contribute to architecture and design reviews and support system-level technical direction for the team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Information Technology, Information Security, Cybersecurity, or a closely related field, with 4 to 6 years of relevant experience, or equivalent demonstrated knowledge such as a bachelor’s degree in another concentration plus 8 years of full-time relevant experience.
  • Strong C++ software development experience in embedded or systems-level environments.
  • Experience developing, debugging, and validating software on automotive embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with CAN and vehicle communication fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with cloud-connected system behavior and telephony or cellular communication protocols.
  • Experience performing design analysis and translating requirements into software architecture, interfaces, and implementation plans.
  • Experience investigating defects, debugging complex issues, and driving corrective action through closure.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly across engineering teams, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively with moderate autonomy while escalating risk and seeking support appropriately when needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with telematics software, connectivity services, or safety-critical automotive domains.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux environments
  • Familiarity with automotive diagnostics

Success Profile

A strong candidate for this role will:

  • Write efficient and scalable code.
  • Build software with quality, maintainability, performance, security, functional safety, efficiency, and deployability in mind.
  • Shift testing and quality activities as early into development as possible.
  • Solve moderate problems quickly and creatively, while making intentional engineering tradeoffs.
  • Investigate issues independently, formulate sound approaches, and execute effectively across feature work and problem solving.
  • Contribute to components or sections of the system architecture and actively participate in design reviews.
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively and report workstream status accurately when projects encounter risk.
  • Recognize when help is needed and pull in the right support to keep delivery moving.
  • Help onboard and support newer engineers on the team.

Example Scope of Technical Ownership

This engineer may own or become the go-to contact for one or more of the following areas:

  • Telematics application software running on the control unit
  • Connected services behaviors and platform interactions
  • Vehicle network communication and diagnostics interfaces
  • Cellular connectivity, packet data, APN, SMS, or modem-related workflows
  • Supplier issue triage and end-to-end resolution
  • Integration and validation support for releases, builds, and field debugging
