GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC EHS Technical Programs Intern - Onsite Date of Internship: Summer 2027   Job Summary: GM Performance Power Units is seeking an EHS Technical Programs Summer Intern to support the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team with occupational safety and environmental compliance programs and policy development. This internship will provide experience in technical writing, researching requirements, developing and improving policies and programs, organizing compliance information, and translating technical requirements into clear and practical workplace documentation. You’ll help strengthen our environmental and safety programs, learn from experienced professionals, and build technical writing and compliance skills.    Key Responsibilities

Support occupational safety and environmental compliance programs across Manufacturing, Test, Quality, Facilities, Maintenance, and other operational functions. Research applicable federal, state, and local EHS requirements to support program and policy development. Assist with developing and revising EHS policies, procedures, work instructions, forms, and other program documentation. Translate regulatory and technical requirements into clear, practical workplace documentation. Support safety programs related to hazard communication, PPE, machine safety, ergonomics, emergency preparedness, and other workplace hazards. Support environmental programs related to waste, chemicals, air, water, spill prevention, and other applicable requirements. Maintain EHS records and program documentation, including permits, inspection records, reports, and document revisions. Assist with EHS inspections, audits, and program reviews to identify compliance gaps and improvement opportunities. Develop and maintain Excel-based trackers and data tools to support EHS programs, corrective actions, and compliance obligations. Support the development of EHS training materials, presentations, and employee communications. Additional tasks as needed.

  Independent Project

Complete a health and safety project during the course of the internship.

Examples may include:

Conducting an EHS policy or program gap assessment and identifying opportunities for improvement. Developing a regulatory or program requirements matrix to support compliance activities. Creating or improving an Excel-based EHS compliance or program tracking tool.

  Required Qualifications

Current college/university students seeking degrees in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, Technical Communication, Professional Writing, or a related field. Interest in occupational safety, environmental compliance, regulatory research, technical writing, or EHS program development. Basic understanding of workplace safety principles through academic coursework, projects, internships, or other relevant experience. Strong technical writing, editing, proofreading, and document-formatting skills. Strong proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint. Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to collaborate with employees, engineers, technicians, supervisors, and leaders. Comfortable spending time in active manufacturing, laboratory, test, and facility environments. Ability to manage assigned projects and responsibilities with guidance from the EHS team.

  Preferred Qualifications

Coursework related to occupational safety, environmental regulations, industrial hygiene, environmental management, technical or professional writing, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, or related subjects. Familiarity with OSHA and EPA requirements and general occupational safety and environmental compliance concepts. Familiarity with 40 CFR, HAZWOPER, or other applicable EHS regulatory requirements. Experience developing, reviewing, or editing policies, procedures, technical reports, program documents, research papers, or other formal written materials. Previous internship, co-op, research, project, or work experience in manufacturing, automotive, motorsports, aerospace, laboratory, engineering, or another technical environment. Experience with Power BI or other data visualization and analytics tools.

  Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout active manufacturing, laboratory, test, and facility environments. Ability to work in operational environments that may include varying noise levels, equipment traffic, and other manufacturing-related conditions. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
