GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC Health and Safety Engineer Intern - Onsite Date of Internship: Summer 2027 Job Summary: GM Performance Power Units is seeking a Health & Safety Engineering Summer Intern to support the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) team across manufacturing, laboratory, test, and facility operations. This internship provides field-based experience with workplace safety, risk assessments, compliance activities, and safety programs in a high-performance engineering and manufacturing environment. You’ll help keep our workplace safe, learn from experienced safety professionals, and build skills in the safety field such as hazard recognition and risk assessment. Key Responsibilities
Support safety consultation activities for Manufacturing, Test, Quality, Facilities, Maintenance, and other operational functions. Assist with workplace observations and hazard assessments to identify unsafe conditions, workplace hazards, and opportunities for risk reduction. Support the development of practical guidance on safety requirements, risk reduction measures, and workplace controls. Assist with employee and contractor safety engagement related to safe work practices and compliance expectations. Support incident and near-miss investigations through fact gathering, contributing factor identification, documentation, and corrective action follow-up. Assist with evaluations of specific occupational hazards, including machine safety, PPE, material handling, chemicals, ergonomics, compressed gases, and other workplace exposures. Support safety reviews for new or modified equipment, equipment installations, maintenance activities, testing operations, and other higher-risk work. Assist with the development and delivery of safety training, toolbox talks, and employee awareness activities. Support compliance assessments to evaluate adherence to established workplace requirements, procedures, and applicable safety requirements. Participate in formal inspections, internal audits, regulatory readiness activities, emergency preparedness activities and safety drills, and other compliance assurance efforts. Assist with maintaining safety records and documentation, including assessment results, investigation records, inspection findings, and supporting program documentation. Additional tasks as needed.
Independent Project
Complete a health and safety project during the course of the internship.
Examples may include:
Supporting an occupational hygiene or workplace exposure assessment. Developing or improving a safety training or employee communication program. Evaluating a specific workplace hazard or safety process and recommending improvements.
Required Qualifications
Current college/university students seeking degrees in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Fire Science, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Maintenance or a related field. Interest in occupational health and safety, manufacturing safety, risk management, or workplace compliance. Basic understanding of workplace safety principles through academic coursework, projects, internships, or other relevant experience. Strong proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint. Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to collaborate with employees, engineers, technicians, supervisors, and leaders. Comfortable spending time in active manufacturing, laboratory, test, and facility environments. Ability to manage assigned projects and responsibilities with guidance from the EHS team.
Preferred Qualifications
Coursework related to occupational safety, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, risk assessment, engineering, environmental health and safety, or related subjects. Familiarity with OSHA requirements, 40 CFR environmental regulations, HAZWOPER requirements, and general occupational safety and environmental compliance concepts. Previous internship, co-op, research, project, or work experience in manufacturing, automotive, motorsports, aerospace, laboratory, engineering, or another technical environment. Experience collecting, organizing, or analyzing data and developing reports and presentations.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout active manufacturing, laboratory, test, and facility environments. Ability to work in operational environments that may include varying noise levels, equipment traffic, and other manufacturing-related conditions. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment in required areas.
