GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC High Voltage Electronics Engineer Intern - Onsite Date of Internship: Summer 2027 Job Summary: GM Performance Power Units is seeking a motivated High Voltage Electronics Engineer Intern to join our ERS (Energy Recovery System) team in Concord, NC. This internship supports the build of an Analog HV Battery Control Box benchtop training and test rig — a hands-on platform that will train new engineers and technicians on high-voltage safety fundamentals and characterize HV subsystems ahead of vehicle integration. You'll work alongside experienced electrical engineers across the build phases, gaining direct exposure to analog safety-critical design, PCB layout for high voltage, and HV commissioning practices used in a Formula 1 power unit program. Key Responsibilities
Support schematic capture and component selection for the discrete-analog HV safety path (precharge, contactor drive, HVIL) under the direction of the build lead. Assist with PCB layout reviews for HV creepage/clearance compliance (IEC 60664) and help document design margins. Help draft and pilot-test procedures for the HV training curriculum modules (safety fundamentals, precharge, IMD operation, contactor sequencing). Participate in bench testing and data collection during rig commissioning, under direct supervision of a certified HV-competent engineer. Document test results, build progress, and design decisions to support the safety case review package. Support characterization studies on HV subsystems as the rig transitions to broader ERS test capability. Observe and assist with HV safety procedures (LOTO, HVIL checks, insulation-resistance testing) to build foundational HV safety competency. Additional tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications
Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline. Coursework or lab project experience in analog circuit design (op-amps, comparators, discrete logic). Basic understanding of electrical safety principles; willingness to complete GMPPU HV safety certification prior to any hands-on HV work. Strong attention to detail and disciplined documentation habits. Ability to work on-site in Concord, NC for the duration of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior project experience with PCB design tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar). Exposure to lab test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, bench power supplies). Coursework or project experience involving high-voltage or battery systems (e.g., Formula SAE Electric, EV club, robotics team). Familiarity with IEC 60664 or similar electrical safety standards. Interest in motorsport, EV powertrains, or hybrid systems.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, and move in diverse operational environments, including race shops, arenas, and commercial facilities. Comfortable working in variable environmental conditions, including loud, high-traffic, or high-pressure environments.
