The posting

Greywright is hiring a Senior Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Engineer to lead the build-out and improvement of the algorithms that keep platforms on course, from design and simulation through fielding. You will build and lead the GNC team and set the direction for advancing baseline GNC capabilities, owning architecture and technical direction from requirements through embedded software and test. You'll work closely with platform hardware, software, and systems engineering.

In this role you will help build the most advanced unmanned maritime vessels in the world.

Requirements

What you'll do

  • Develop and tune guidance and control laws for high-speed craft that stay stable and responsive through nonlinear, regime-dependent dynamics across the full speed envelope.
  • Extend and maintain high-fidelity 6-DOF simulations and models of vehicle dynamics across speed regimes, sensors, actuators, and sea states.
  • Develop, update, and maintain navigation filters (e.g., Kalman / EKF / UKF) fusing IMU, GNSS, odometry, signals of interest, and other sensor data, including position sources that are sparse, intermittent, or of variable accuracy.
  • Design measurement validation, outlier rejection, and fault detection so navigation degrades gracefully when aiding sources drop out, disagree, or change in quality.
  • Derive GNC requirements, error budgets, and stability margins; run Monte Carlo and linear analyses to verify performance.
  • Use system identification and on-water test data to build vehicle models and refine controller tuning.
  • Implement GNC algorithms in embedded software (C/C++) and support code generation from models.
  • Plan and execute software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and field tests; analyze test data.
  • Support sensor and actuator selection, calibration, and integration with avionics and hardware teams.
  • Build and lead the GNC team: recruit and hire engineers, establish the team's tools, processes, and standards, own the roadmap for evolving the GNC baseline, mentor engineers, and present results in design reviews.

What you bring

  • Proven track record of engineering leadership.
  • Ability to work well in a fast moving and dynamic team environment.
  • B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of GNC experience, including technical leadership and building or leading a team, on real world systems.
  • Solid grounding in classical, modern, and nonlinear control theory, rigid-body dynamics, and estimation.
  • Deep experience with Kalman filters and inertial navigation, including fusing asynchronous, intermittent, or degraded aiding measurements.
  • Experience designing controllers for systems with strongly nonlinear or regime-dependent dynamics (e.g., gain scheduling, adaptive, or robust control).
  • Experience inheriting, validating, and improving fielded GNC software.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or Python for modeling, simulation, and data analysis.
  • Strong C/C++ embedded software skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort working across hardware and software teams.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time when needed.
  • This role requires access to ITAR/EAR-controlled data; U.S. person status is required as defined by 22 CFR 120.62.

Nice to have

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in a GNC-related discipline.
  • Fielded heritage: GNC you designed has been deployed on a real vehicle or system.
  • Experience with optimal control, trajectory optimization, or MPC.
  • Experience with marine vehicle dynamics, high-speed surface craft, or vessel autopilots.
  • Experience with alternative or GNSS-degraded navigation (e.g., signals of opportunity, feature-based, or collaborative navigation).
  • Hardware-in-the-loop test bench development.
  • Exposure to DO-178C, NASA-STD-8739.8, or similar software assurance processes.
  • Eligibility to obtain a U.S. security clearance.

Benefits

  • Meaningful early-stage equity.
  • Great health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Unlimited vacation.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
