Job Description

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism, and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We are looking for a deputy digital editor to support digital editors with day-to-day oversight of all GNM’s digital content.

You’ll play a crucial role in ensuring our digital presence is dynamic, engaging, and globally responsive. Supporting the head of digital (live), you’ll help oversee the flow of content across multiple platforms, ensuring breaking stories and live coverage are delivered with speed, accuracy, and creativity.

In addition, you’ll deputise for the head of digital (live) and in their absence, manage the team of homepage editors.

This is a 9-month fixed-term contract or staff secondment, on a 9-day fortnight working pattern (including Saturdays).

About the role

  • Assist with running the day's digital output, working closely with desk editors and the digital editing team to respond in smart, imaginative ways to stories throughout the day.
  • Lead the digital desk on Saturdays to ensure our weekend online offering is well planned and promoted, as well as responding to live news as it happens
  • Manage the UK, Europe, and International homepages on a day-to-day basis.
  • Send breaking news alerts and oversee live blogs.
  • Work with design, visuals, video, community and audience teams to ensure the best possible expression of the Guardian’s digital output.
  • Work with planning teams and different desks to schedule content and to ensure meticulous preparation for live events.
  • Attend planning and ideas meetings to ensure the Guardian’s digital needs are reflected in commissioning decisions.
  • Attend meetings and work with colleagues in digital development to agree and shape plans to develop the Guardian’s digital storytelling.
  • Understand targets and metrics and build them into balanced editing judgments.

About you

  • Significant experience of a live newsroom, ideally at a national or international news organisation
  • Strong understanding of content management systems (CMS), digital publishing, and analytics tools (e.g. Ophan)
  • Experience of editing homepages and articles
  • Understanding and knowledge or analytics, search and other measurements of digital audience and targets
  • Strong record of creativity and innovation in digital journalism
  • Proven track record of using social media channels to engage diverse audiences, adapt stories for platform-specific formats, and drive digital reach
  • Clear vision of the purpose and aims of the Guardian
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role.

We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

We operate in a hybrid environment working at least three days a week from our offices in King’s Cross in London.

The minimum salary for this NUJ position starts from £63,712, with a package commensurate with the skills, level of experience and responsibilities of the position.

We appreciate the time taken to prepare each application we receive. We do not use AI-assisted technology to review applications; every application is reviewed by a member of our recruitment team.

The closing date for applications is Thursday 12 November 2026.

Benefits at the Guardian

You'll have six weeks of annual leave per year pro rata (plus bank holidays) with the option to purchase an additional 5 days. Our pension scheme is generous; if you contribute 5% then we will contribute 8-12% (depending on your age). We believe in giving back, which is why employees are given 2 volunteering days annually and the option of payroll giving. Season ticket loans are also available.

You are entitled to life cover, income protection, and eye tests. You can also opt in to dental insurance.

We have enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave policies in place. We also support our employees by offering an IVF, menopause, baby loss, and trans equality policy.

Culture and wellbeing

We want everyone to feel like they belong at the Guardian and we champion diversity of thought. Our various employee forums provide a platform to use their voice to foster an inclusive workplace. We became the first major media organisation to achieve B Corp status.

We offer tools to help you prioritise your wellbeing including access to our employee benefits platform which provides tailored support for health and wellbeing. In addition, we also offer free yoga and pilates classes. These run alongside our corporate gym membership and cycle to work scheme.

Our canteen has views overlooking the Regents Canal and caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.

What if my background isn't good enough?

Yes, on the employer's own form, the hardest ones included. Where a question needs you, you answer it right there and AI suggests the best answer. Don't want us applying from our IP addresses? Use our Chrome extension: we apply straight from your own browser.
