The posting

Help us shape the future!

There’s never been a more exciting time to join HL. We’re looking for a Head of Investment and Market Risk Oversight to support our bold ambition to become the UK’s premier investment and savings platform, all in service of our purpose to help Britain build wealth with confidence.

We’re transforming how we support our clients through personalised guidance, distinctive products and trusted expertise, and our people are at the heart of making that happen.

Join us and you’ll have the opportunity to think boldly, do brilliant work and make a purposeful difference, while growing your career and helping to shape the next chapter of HL.

About the role

Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, you’ll lead HL’s independent second-line oversight of investment and market risk across our funds, products, investment solutions and own balance sheet. You’ll set the direction for our Investment Risk Framework, provide authoritative challenge to senior leaders and Boards, and ensure material risks are understood and managed within appetite. Combining deep technical expertise with commercial judgement, you’ll build a forward-looking capability that protects clients, informs strategic decisions and helps HL respond confidently to changing markets, regulation and emerging macro trends.

What you’ll be doing

  • Set the strategy for, own and continually develop HL’s Investment Risk Framework, methodologies, standards and analytical toolkit.
  • Lead independent second-line oversight and evidence-based challenge across investment, market, liquidity, treasury, counterparty, credit and concentration risk.
  • Shape risk appetite, limits, metrics and stress-testing approaches, ensuring breaches, concentrations and emerging trends are identified and escalated clearly.
  • Provide proactive risk oversight for new and changing funds, products and investment solutions before launch.
  • Advise the Chief Risk Officer, Chief Investment Officer, senior executives, governance committees and Boards through clear, decision-useful reporting and insight.
  • Track market and macroeconomic developments, translating complex quantitative analysis into practical implications for clients, portfolios and HL’s balance sheet.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of investment-risk specialists while strengthening data, technology and automation across the capability.

About you

Essential

  • Significant senior-level experience in investment, portfolio or quantitative risk within asset management, investment management or a comparable regulated financial-services environment.
  • Deep knowledge of multi-asset investment-risk methodologies, including market and liquidity risk, portfolio construction, asset allocation, performance and portfolio risk drivers.
  • Practical expertise in scenario analysis, stress testing, quantitative risk measurement and risk appetite, limits and monitoring frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of funds, fund-of-funds structures, underlying holdings, derivatives and the relationship between investment risk and performance.
  • Experience of firm-level market, treasury and balance-sheet risk, including counterparty, credit and concentration risk.
  • Detailed knowledge of the investment-risk regulatory environment, including UCITS and AIFMD requirements.
  • A strong record of influencing senior stakeholders, constructively challenging decisions and translating complex analysis for executive and Board audiences.
  • Proven experience leading and developing specialist risk professionals.

Desirable

  • CFA, FRM, PRM or a comparable professional qualification.
  • Experience with institutional risk platforms such as MSCI BarraOne, LiquidityMetrics or comparable analytical tools.
  • Experience of investment-risk governance involving Boards, investment committees or regulated fund-management entities, and of developing analytics, dashboards or automation.

We know great candidates don’t always meet every requirement. If this opportunity excites you and you have many of the skills and experiences we’re looking for, we encourage you to apply.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
