We are a private enterprise with more than a 100-year legacy and track record of financial success, supporting our communities, and taking care of our employees. We plan strategically with a long-term time horizon and an integrated approach to access superior opportunities and optimize financial results. Integrity, collaboration, and dedication are cornerstones of our workplace culture that create rewarding professional experiences.

Position Description

The Tax Manager will serve as a senior technical and quality assurance leader within the Accounting team, supporting complex tax compliance and financial accounting activities across trusts, individuals, estates, and related filings. This role will review complex tax work, provide technical guidance, lead research and training efforts, and help strengthen processes across a broad range of trust structures and investment types. The Tax Manager will also mentor team members, support work prioritization, and contribute to the resolution of complex tax, data, and systemic issues. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in trust, individual, gift, and GST tax compliance, along with a collaborative, hands-on approach to leadership and problem-solving.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a senior technical resource and quality assurance leader for trust, individual, gift, GST, and estate tax compliance matters.
  • Review complex tax compliance work prepared by others, identify potential risks or inconsistencies, and provide clear, constructive guidance to support accurate and timely filings.
  • Contribute directly to the annual tax compliance cycle and remain comfortable working across responsibilities, from detailed review and troubleshooting to broader process leadership.
  • Manage and mentor one or more team members, with an emphasis on professional development, career planning, coaching, and effective prioritization.
  • Provide functional leadership to team members across a collaborative, relatively flat reporting structure, including individuals who may not report directly to this position.
  • Research new tax legislation, credits, investment structures, and other technical developments, translating complex topics into practical guidance for the broader team.
  • Develop and lead training and knowledge-sharing efforts related to trust, individual, gift, GST, and estate tax compliance.
  • Lead or contribute to the resolution of complex technical, data, and systemic nuances affecting tax compliance and financial accounting processes.
  • Support quality assurance for information flowing across entities and tax structures, including partnership information incorporated into trust and individual filings.
  • Oversee or contribute to the federal tax notice process, including research, response development, and representation in connection with complex IRS matters.
  • Serve as a liaison with external legal and professional service partners on estate tax filings and other specialized matters, as needed.
  • Partner with Accounting leadership and colleagues to establish priorities, manage shifting workloads, and maintain progress during high-volume periods.
  • Cross-train outside the role’s primary areas of expertise and provide broader support to the Accounting team throughout the annual cycle.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • CPA or JD preferred; Enrolled Agent designation desired for candidates without a CPA.
  • Approximately 10 or more years of progressive tax compliance experience preferred.
  • Deep experience with trust, individual, gift, and GST tax compliance, including exposure to a broad range of trust structures (such as ESBTs, distributing trusts, dynasty or sprinkler trusts, and charitable trusts).
  • Experience working with varied underlying investment portfolios that may include investment partnerships or hedge funds, real estate, marketable securities, operating businesses, and other investment types.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing complex tax work and maintaining a proactive quality control mindset.
  • Experience managing people, leading complex processes, and coaching or training others.
  • Ability to research complex technical matters and communicate findings clearly to colleagues with varying levels of subject-matter expertise.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to connect issues across entities, processes, and functional areas.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, advocate for an appropriate position, and navigate complex interactions with tax authorities or external advisors.
  • Experience with federal tax notices, IRS representation, estate tax matters, foreign investment disclosures, and/or tax compliance research is preferred.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience using tax compliance software; experience with CCH Axcess is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative approach.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, diverse responsibilities, and seasonal periods of increased workload.
  • Willingness to work hands-on at both the detailed and strategic levels.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
