  • Wire news decision-making
  • Copy editing for print
  • Page editing, including headline and caption writing, photo selection and trimming stories to fit.
  • Proofing pages

Depending on the size of the newspaper, depth of editing and other factors, the production editor may perform all of these tasks for a page, set of pages or a section; or play one or two of these roles on a section or set of pages. Often, production editors will serve in one or two of these roles for part of a shift, and in other sets of these roles for another part of the shift.

Being flexible, adaptable and able to flex between the roles and vary the depth of editing and finishing is a crucial part of this role.

Key qualifications

  • Page layout and section organization.
  • Copy editing, including headline writing and caption writing
  • Savvy to finish and typeset a page on time
  • Experience in print news production
  • Ability to work with multiple products and multiple people with a customer-service focus.

Specialty Skills

  • Newspaper editing, headline writing and caption writing
  • Aptitude in sports story and page editing a plus
  • Newspaper page proofing
  • Excellent literacy in English
  • CUE/CCI experience plus.

Special to this role

While we are looking for editors who can work across topics, this role will primarily be focused on editing and presenting sports news in the Hearst papers throughout Texas, especially focused on Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin.

As such, sports journalism is a specialty sill that is necessary for success, as will the ability to work in other parts of the operation outside of sports.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.

We make the most of the background you have. The CV uses every piece of relevant proof your profile holds, and one of the 25 readers reads your whole profile and flags what the CV left out.

Do you really apply for me?

Yes, on the employer's own form, the hardest ones included. Where a question needs you, you answer it right there and AI suggests the best answer. Don't want us applying from our IP addresses? Use our Chrome extension: we apply straight from your own browser.

Is it a subscription?
