Role Overview

The Houston Chronicle is looking for a creative and ambitious student journalist to join its Visuals team for the summer 2027 internship program.

The position is designed for motivated student journalists who want to build careers in visual journalism and gain hands-on experience producing photography and video in a major newsroom. The intern will help produce compelling still photography and short-form video for the Chronicle’s website and social platforms, including TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts. They will have the opportunity to collaborate across the newsroom to tell visually driven stories that capture Houston’s people, culture and breaking news moments.

Our summer interns are integral members of the newsroom, producing work that reaches hundreds of thousands of readers and viewers. Past interns have gone on to full-time roles at the Chronicle as reporters, producers and editors across our newsroom and audience teams.

Hybrid: Interns work in the Chronicle’s office at least 3 days a week.

What You’ll Do

  • Photograph and film daily and enterprise assignments in coordination with editors and reporters.
  • Pitch, shoot, edit and publish short-form videos optimized for social platforms.
  • Identify visual storytelling opportunities across beats and social trends.
  • Edit and caption photos and videos with attention to accuracy, tone and engagement.
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors and the audience team to translate Chronicle journalism into visual stories.
  • Contribute ideas for visual storytelling that strengthen the Chronicle’s reach and connection with audiences.

What You’ll Bring

  • Juniors, seniors or recent graduates with prior experience at a college news publication or professional news organization.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car.
  • Ability to obtain housing in Houston.

Internship Details

  • 40 hours a week for 10 weeks, from early June to early August. Interns will be paid $15 an hour.
  • Interns will work Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend coverage based on news demands.
  • The recruiting committee will assign all interns a mentor from the newsroom based on their interests.

How to Apply

Please submit a portfolio of 5 visual clips (portfolio websites are acceptable), a resume, and a 1-page cover letter addressed to the recruiting committee detailing your passion for journalism and what you hope to achieve through this internship.

Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications, including the required documents, by October 25, 2026.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
