The posting

Role Overview

Come set the standard for a modern, high-impact sports business reporter in one of the largest and most competitive sports markets in the country.

The Dallas Morning News seeks a sharp, enterprising reporter to cover the everyday business of sports — a beat that examines the crossroads of money, power and athletics in one of the most influential sports markets in the country. This position won’t just focus on the movers and shakers, but also fans and customers impacted by the financial decisions of team executives. The right candidate will be as comfortable writing explanatory stories as they are on camera, working simultaneously on big-picture projects and quick-turn content.

Hybrid: Hearst Newspapers operates on a hybrid work week schedule.

What You’ll Do

  • Break news and write deeply reported enterprise stories.
  • Write quick-hit stories, including alt-format, to serve North Texas readers and the decisions they make when spending money on sports and leisure.
  • Build and maintain a wide network of sources across sports, business, law, media and higher education.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues on the business, sports and visuals teams.
  • Contribute to live events, panel discussions, native videos, and other storytelling platforms.
  • Turn complex financial and legal developments into clear, accessible reporting for a broad audience.
  • Help with traditional sports coverage for marquee events, games and matches when readership is at its height.
  • Appear on camera for short, quick-hit videos. Experience with on-the-go video editing is a plus.

What You’ll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • Three years of reporting experience, ideally with exposure to business, investigative or sports journalism.
  • Strong sourcing, writing and reporting skills.
  • Aptitude for financial documents, public records and legal filings.
  • Track record of strong enterprise work and breaking news.
  • Ability to turn daily stories while simultaneously working bigger-picture enterprise.
  • Adept with social media and website analytics, using the numbers to inform approach.
  • Comfort and experience on camera in multiple formats.
  • Ability to work under pressure with assigned deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the Dallas-Fort Worth sports landscape.
  • Fluency in Spanish.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
