Working with hireworks means unlocking access to a network of local peers and mentors and career opportunities through our client network.

About Our client

A leading provider of innovative software and services to K-12 schools and educational institutions worldwide. Their mission is to empower schools to transform education through technology. They believe in the power of education to shape the future, and are committed to helping schools prepare students for success and make a positive impact on the world.

Position Overview

Our client's events platform handles ticketing and registration on a modern, cloud-native AWS stack (ECS, Lambda, EventBridge, Aurora, DynamoDB), the most architecturally current platform in Payments. It was recently brought into the portfolio, and ownership is still transitioning from the previous team. A legacy portal and integration layer are being retired along the way. The inherited team is larger than the steady-state model the business is planning toward, with infrastructure, SRE, and DBA skills spread across generalists rather than dedicated roles. This role leads the team through the remainder of that transition and into a leaner, focused, scalable operating model, making the calls on team composition along the way.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the events engineering team through ownership transition, working toward full, independent production-deploy capability
  • Partner with the team's anchor technical leads to maintain continuity through the transition
  • Drive the team toward its steady-state target model, including an honest assessment of the current inherited team
  • Own delivery and process for the events platform, including a limited-hours, shared on-call model
  • Help retire the legacy portal and integration layer in favor of the platform's modern, native services
  • Hold regular 1:1s, give direct feedback, and build a durable team culture across a distributed team
  • Use AI-assisted development tools as part of how the team navigates and evolves a still-transitioning

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of overall experience (8+ years hands-on technical)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Comfort managing a distributed, remote team while operating primarily within US business hours
  • Strong technical fluency in a modern, containerized AWS environment: ECS, Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge, and a managed relational database
  • Comfort reasoning about backend architecture and system-design trade-offs (service boundaries, data modeling, event-driven design) at a level sufficient to guide the team's technical decisions
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one programming language, ideally .NET, Java, or Python
  • Experience with at least one observability platform (Datadog, New Relic, Honeycomb, or comparable)
  • Deep experience with automated testing frameworks
  • Experience assessing a larger inherited team against a leaner target operating model, including the people decisions that come with it
  • Working knowledge of modern CI/CD practices and production deployment safety
  • Proficiency with Claude Code, Codex, or comparable AI-assisted development tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience managing other engineers formally
  • Experience with .NET or Java specifically
  • Deep experience with AWS
  • Hands-on PCI compliance experience: familiarity with PCI-DSS requirements as they apply to the events platform's ticketing and payment workflows
  • Experience with event ticketing, registration, or similarly bursty, high-concurrency consumer-facing platforms
  • Experience retiring a legacy monolith in favor of modern, cloud-native services while the platform stays live
  • Experience managing globally distributed teams while keeping delivery aligned to US business hours

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
