Job Description

Holland America Line has been exploring the world since 1873. Our ships offer innovative features and enriching experiences focused on destination exploration and personalized travel, inviting guests to savor the journey.

We’re looking for an experienced Analyst, Maritime HR Operations to fill this role.

Here’s a summary of what Holland America Line is looking for in its Maritime HR Operations. Is this you?

The Analyst, Maritime HR Operations turns maritime HR data into clear insight and practical improvement for Holland America Line and Seabourn. Reporting to the Director, Maritime HR and Operations, the Analyst supports every team within Maritime HR Strategy & Operations: Talent Management, Talent Acquisition, Fleet Training & Compliance, Fleet Compensation, the Competency Framework team and Expedition. The role collects and validates data from core systems such as Mistral (crew management and time & attendance), payroll and HR data sources, training and certification records, the Focus Report and compensation models, and builds dashboards that visualize work streams, establishment, promotions, training, turnover and cost. The Analyst reviews shipboard work and rest hours and workload, identifies compliance risks and trends, and supports ship leadership and Marine and Technical Operations with fact-based recommendations. Using AI, automation and Microsoft 365 / Power BI tools, the Analyst reduces the team's dependency on manual processes and spreadsheets, and moves the department towards a reliable, per-person view of each seafarer's status. The ideal candidate combines strong analytical and visualization skills with curiosity about maritime operations and a collaborative, service-oriented approach.

Responsibilities

Data Collection, Management & Quality

  • The Analyst gathers and integrates maritime HR data from sources such as Mistral (crew management, establishment and time & attendance), payroll and HR data and analytics reports, training and certification records (including CSMART and STCW data), performance appraisals and PDRs, the Focus Report, recruitment pipelines and compensation models and wage scales. The Analyst builds and maintains a structured, documented data model with clear definitions (for example establishment, vacancies, time in rank, days worked and turnover) so all teams use one version of the truth. Data quality checks, cleansing and validation routines are implemented to ensure accuracy and reliability, and discrepancies between systems (for example establishment counts that shift between reports) are investigated, root causes identified and corrections agreed with system owners. The Analyst manages access, confidentiality and retention of personal data in line with company policy and applicable data protection requirements.

Analysis, Interpretation & Predictive Modelling

  • The Analyst applies statistical, computational and modelling techniques to identify trends, patterns and anomalies in workforce, training, compensation and operational data. This includes analyzing turnover and retention drivers, promotion flow and progression bottlenecks, time-to-hire, training completion and certificate expiry, establishment versus Focus Report alignment, pay equity and the cost impact of CBA or policy changes. The Analyst builds forecasting and predictive models to support workforce planning, for example officer and rating demand for fleet deployment and newbuilds, attrition risk, cadet-to-officer conversion, promotion readiness, work-squad requirements and the effect of rotation changes such as days on/off calculations. Findings are translated into clear, practical options with the assumptions and risks stated, so leaders can prioritize effort and resources as a team.

Reporting & Visualization

  • The Analyst develops and maintains dashboards, charts and standard reports, mainly in Power BI and Microsoft 365, that visualize the department's work streams and KPIs for different audiences: the VP Maritime HR Strategy & Operations, the Director and team leads, Marine and Technical Operations, brand leadership and, where required, auditors, flag states and union reporting. Core outputs include establishment and vacancy dashboards, promotion and 'Ready for Promotion' views, training and compliance status, turnover and retention, compensation and equity analysis, project and initiative tracking, and monthly and quarterly leadership reporting. The Analyst ensures dashboards refresh automatically from source systems, are easy to use, and show a clear, per-person and per-ship view where needed. The role also prepares data packs for CBA negotiations, audits and leadership presentations.

Work & Rest Hours and Workload Reviews

  • The Analyst supports the review of shipboard work and rest hours and workload for Deck and Technical seafarers, and for other departments as requested. Using Mistral time & attendance and related reports, the Analyst monitors compliance with MLC and STCW rest hour requirements and the provisions of the applicable CBAs, identifies violations, patterns and ranks or ships at risk, and checks that violations are commented on and compensatory rest is recorded. The Analyst analyses workload drivers by rank, department, vessel and itinerary type (for example port-intensive itineraries, dry docks and shortages against the Table of Personnel), and supports manning and Table of Personnel reviews, rotation design and new-role proposals with data. Findings are shared with ship leadership, Marine and Technical Operations and the Maritime HR team, and the Analyst prepares work and rest hour overviews for audits, Port State Control follow-up and union requests.

Automation, AI & Process Improvement

  • The Analyst identifies opportunities to reduce manual work across Maritime HR and improve decision-making. This includes mapping current work streams and handoffs between teams, removing duplicate data entry, and automating recurring reports, data collection and workflows using Power BI, Power Automate, SharePoint, Microsoft Copilot and other AI tools. The Analyst works with Maritime engineers and operations managers, compliance officers, corporate HR Data & Analytics, IT and the Mistral team to put data insights into action and to improve system configuration and reporting. The role documents processes and data definitions, trains colleagues in self-service reporting, and measures the impact of improvements (for example time saved, error reduction and KPI movement). The Analyst works collaboratively with all Maritime HR groups and treats each team as an internal customer.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or certifications in Data Analytics, Statistics, Information Systems, Business, Human Resources, Maritime Studies or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced Excel and strong Power BI (DAX, Power Query, data modelling) skills; SQL and/or Python or R is an advantage.
  • Experience with automation and AI tools such as Power Automate, SharePoint, Microsoft Copilot or similar.
  • Ability to apply statistical and forecasting techniques and to explain results clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Understanding of HR, payroll or crew management data; knowledge of MLC/STCW work and rest hour rules and CBAs is preferred or can be learned.
  • High accuracy and attention to detail, with a structured approach to data quality and documentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality when handling personal and pay data.
  • Collaborative, curious and open to new ideas, technology and continuous improvement.
  • This is a hybrid position, based in our Seattle office. Candidates must be comfortable coming into the office 4 days/week (currently Monday - Thursday)

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
