Job Description

Process Control Engineer II

The Honeywell LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) Organization is devoted to delivering innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers in the energy industry. We are uniquely positioned to utilize our world-class liquefaction technology to develop cutting-edge end-to-end solutions for the LNG industry, providing full plant engineered offerings to our customers. To support this growing demand, we are seeking a talented Process Controls Engineer to contribute to the development of our next-generation offerings.

As a Process Controls Engineer at Honeywell, you will use your knowledge of LNG processes and control system implementation to help Honeywell deliver equipment and plant designs to the global LNG market. You will work under Honeywell LNG Engineering management in a multi-disciplinary team that is responsible for development of plant system designs and control architecture based on our proprietary liquefaction technology.

You will contribute to the development of Honeywell LNG’s end-to-end solutions by designing, testing, and validating process control systems. You will support execution projects from early engineering development through final project execution. This includes supporting the development of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), control narratives, network diagrams, and logic diagrams, and working with programming engineers to specify, test, and implement control system logic at customer sites. You will also support customers through aftermarket training, process data evaluation, advanced control strategy implementation, and startup support. While this position is primarily focused on process controls, approximately 10% to 20% of the role may provide backup support to the team’s I&E engineering function, including I&E design and implementation activities and factory acceptance testing of fabricated modules.

This position requires intermittent domestic and international travel to support customer-related activities; annual travel time is 10% to 20%. You will report directly to our Plant Systems Manager, who works out of the Allentown, PA Honeywell LNG office. The location of this position is in the Allentown, PA office.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead development of the process control system scope for LNG project bids, productized designs, and awarded equipment projects.
  • Develop and review Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), control narratives, logic diagrams, alarm philosophies, permissives, interlocks, and operating sequences to satisfy process, safety, customer, and regulatory requirements.
  • Define control system functional requirements and collaborate with PLC and DCS programming teams to translate process requirements into robust control logic and operator interfaces.
  • Design, evaluate, and implement advanced control strategies for LNG processes to improve stability, efficiency, throughput, operability, and equipment protection.
  • Analyze process and control system data to identify performance gaps, troubleshoot dynamic process behavior, tune control loops, and recommend control strategy improvements.
  • Plan and execute control system functional testing, simulation, Factory Acceptance Testing, and integrated system testing in coordination with project and programming teams.
  • Provide onsite startup and commissioning support, including control loop checkout, logic validation, sequence testing, troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and transition to stable plant operation.
  • Deliver aftermarket customer training on control system operation, process response, alarm management, troubleshooting, and effective use of implemented control strategies.
  • Support aftermarket customers through remote and onsite technical assistance, process data evaluation, control system optimization, and implementation of control strategy upgrades.
  • Work with Process Engineering, Process Systems, Safety Engineering, Startup and Commissioning, and project teams to ensure the controls scope supports safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation.
  • Develop, maintain, and apply internal controls engineering standards, practices, specifications, and reusable design methods consistent with customer and industry requirements.
  • Review customer and project specifications, identify exceptions or areas requiring clarification, and communicate technical recommendations and risks.
  • Prepare and maintain process controls documentation throughout the project lifecycle, including test procedures, test records, commissioning plans, operating guidance, and technical reports.
  • Identify opportunities to improve control system designs, engineering workflows, standard solutions, and plant performance.
  • Provide backup support, as needed, to the team’s separate I&E engineering role for approximately 10% to 20% of the position, including review and support of I&E design and implementation activities and participation in Factory Acceptance Testing of fabricated modules.

Qualifications

YOU MUST HAVE:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics.
  • 2+ years of experience as a Process or Process Controls Engineer, ideally within the energy or oil and gas industry; significant applicable experience in plant operations will also be considered.
  • 2+ years of proficiency in preparing controls narratives and logic diagrams.
  • 2+ years of proficiency in reviewing and preparing P&IDs.
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel 10-20% to support customer-related activities in the US & internationally

WE VALUE:

  • Experience in function testing and commissioning PLC logic.
  • Experience in evaluating process data to recommend control strategies.
  • Ability to act as a liaison with external programming teams and with clients, providing technical support and communication.
  • Familiarity with operating complex process plants, especially LNG or cryogenic plants.
  • Experience with control design.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Prior knowledge or experience in Controls and/or Systems Engineering.
  • Working knowledge of I&E design, implementation, module fabrication, or factory acceptance testing sufficient to provide backup support to the team’s dedicated I&E engineering role.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
