The posting

TL;DR

  • Early-career Cloud Platform Service Engineer working within a major Cloud and infrastructure platform managed service
  • Great next step for someone with some hands-on IT infrastructure, cloud or technical support experience who wants to develop their career
  • Fast-growing technology consultancy specialising in the energy sector - both renewables and oil & gas
  • Aberdeen preferred; elsewhere in Scotland considered with regular travel to Aberdeen
  • Work directly with real enterprise cloud and infrastructure platforms
  • Support day-to-day incidents, service requests, monitoring, patching, backups and standard changes
  • Some practical experience with areas such as Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, Active Directory, networking, VMware or Microsoft 365 would be useful
  • We don't expect you to know all of these technologies — gaps are absolutely fine
  • More interested in good technical fundamentals, curiosity and willingness to learn than a long list of certifications
  • Learn from experienced Cloud and Infrastructure Platform Engineers and a Platform Technical Lead
  • Develop practical skills across cloud, infrastructure, automation and troubleshooting
  • Clear technical progression path into Cloud and Infrastructure Platform Engineer
  • Energy sector experience useful but absolutely not required
  • Baseline Disclosure Scotland check required
  • Flexible working (we're very relaxed)

Who are we?

Hypercube Consulting is the leading technology partner for the energy sector. We're building a world-class team of technology experts with deep domain knowledge in all things energy - both renewables and oil & gas.

We work across cloud, infrastructure, data, AI and software, helping energy-sector organisations modernise and operate technology platforms that support genuinely important business services.

To understand more about who we are and what we do, visit our website here: Hypercube | Decision Intelligence for Energy

Role purpose

We're looking for Cloud Platform Service Engineers to join the team delivering a major cloud and platform managed service for an oil and gas customer.

This is an early-career engineering role and we don't expect you to arrive knowing everything.

You might already have some experience supporting Windows servers, Microsoft Azure, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, networking or virtualisation. You may have worked on a service desk or infrastructure support team and be looking for your next step into cloud and infrastructure engineering. Or you may already be working in a junior cloud or infrastructure role and want exposure to a much larger technology environment.

You'll join a team of experienced Cloud and Infrastructure Platform Engineers and a Platform Technical Lead who will support your development. You'll start by handling day-to-day incidents, service requests, monitoring alerts, patching, backups and standard changes, with more experienced engineers available when an issue becomes more complex.

The environment itself is large and varied, covering Microsoft Azure, AWS, VMware, Windows and Linux infrastructure, Microsoft 365 and other cloud technologies. You do not need previous experience with all — or even most — of these.

We want you to investigate problems rather than simply move tickets between queues. When you don't know something, we'll expect you to do some investigation, ask good questions and learn from the engineers around you.

You'll work within established support processes using ServiceNow to manage incidents, requests and changes. If you've never used ServiceNow before, that's fine — experience with another ticketing or IT service-management system is equally useful.

As your knowledge and confidence develop, you'll take on increasingly complex work and have a clear progression route towards becoming a Cloud and Infrastructure Platform Engineer.

Key responsibilities

Day-to-day technical support

  • Help investigate and resolve cloud and infrastructure incidents
  • Respond to monitoring alerts and carry out initial troubleshooting
  • Complete technical service requests and routine operational tasks
  • Keep tickets updated so customers and other engineers know what is happening
  • Follow issues through rather than simply passing them to another team

Platform operations

  • Help operate and maintain the customer's cloud and infrastructure environment
  • Work with technologies such as Microsoft Azure, Windows and Linux servers, VMware, networking, identity and Microsoft 365
  • Carry out routine platform health checks and respond to identified issues
  • Learn how different parts of a large hybrid cloud environment fit together

Patching, backups and routine changes

  • Help deliver regular Windows and Linux patching
  • Monitor backups and investigate straightforward failures
  • Support planned restore testing
  • Carry out documented standard changes using agreed procedures
  • Check that systems are healthy after patching or changes
  • Escalate anything unexpected rather than taking unnecessary risks

Troubleshooting and learning

  • Use logs, monitoring tools and documentation to investigate problems
  • Learn how to troubleshoot issues in a structured way
  • Document what you found and how an issue was resolved
  • Build your knowledge across cloud, infrastructure, networking and automation

Documentation and improvement

  • Follow existing technical runbooks and support procedures
  • Help improve documentation when you find something missing or unclear
  • Create useful knowledge articles from issues you've resolved
  • Suggest ways repetitive tasks could be made simpler or automated
  • Share what you learn with the rest of the team

Requirements

  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Willing to undergo a Baseline Disclosure Scotland check as a condition of employment
  • Able to attend customer site in Aberdeen when required
  • Some previous hands-on experience in IT infrastructure, cloud, technical support or a similar technical role
  • Comfortable working with business systems and following documented processes
  • Willing to learn, ask questions and develop your technical skills
  • Willing to support occasional planned out-of-hours maintenance where required

Technical skills and experience

You do not need to tick every box below.

Experience with some of the following would be useful:

  • Microsoft Azure or another public cloud platform
  • Windows Server
  • Active Directory or Entra ID
  • Microsoft 365
  • VMware or another virtualisation platform
  • Basic networking, DNS and IP addressing
  • Monitoring and backup tools
  • Windows or Linux troubleshooting
  • An IT ticketing or service-management system

You should be comfortable doing some initial investigation when something isn't working — looking at an error message, checking logs or monitoring information, following documentation and explaining what you've already tried when asking another engineer for help.

Any experience with PowerShell, scripting or automation is a bonus, not a requirement. We'll help you develop these skills as part of the role.

Additional beneficial experience

Any of the following would be useful, but none are essential:

  • Azure Virtual Desktop / Nerdio
  • Azure Arc
  • AWS
  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
  • Linux
  • VMware
  • Citrix
  • ServiceNow
  • Backup or monitoring platforms
  • Infrastructure or network support
  • Energy or Oil & Gas environments
  • Consultancy or managed services

What we're looking for

For this role, how you approach technology is just as important as the technologies you've already worked with.

We're looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys figuring out how things work
  • Is willing to investigate a problem before immediately escalating it
  • Isn't afraid to say when they don't know something
  • Asks questions and learns from more experienced engineers
  • Takes ownership of the work they're given
  • Communicates clearly with colleagues and customers
  • Pays attention to detail
  • Wants to develop a career in cloud and infrastructure engineering

We don't expect you to be the finished article. We're looking for someone with good foundations who we can help develop into a really strong Cloud Platform Engineer.

What's in it for you?

For someone early in their career, this role provides the opportunity to work with a much broader and more substantial technology environment than you might normally get exposure to at this stage.

You'll work directly with experienced Cloud Infrastructure Platform Engineers, a Platform Technical Lead and specialists from Hypercube's wider cloud, infrastructure, security, data and AI practices.

You'll get the opportunity to develop practical skills across Microsoft Azure, AWS, hybrid infrastructure, networking, automation and other technologies while working on real production systems.

We will support your training, certification and technical development, and you'll have experienced engineers around you who are expected to help you learn rather than expecting you to already know everything.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
