Job Description:

ICF seeks an Environmental Health Scientist to join our Survey, Policy, Health, Environment, Regulation, and Economics (SPHERE) team. This position will support environmental health science activities for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), with a focus on evaluating environmental data and potential public health impacts at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites (e.g., Superfund sites) and controlled hazardous waste facilities. The successful candidate will combine strong environmental science, site investigation and cleanup, and data-quality skills with the ability to translate complex technical findings into clear, defensible recommendations for federal, state, and local partners and the public.

This full-time position is for a candidate to be located on-site at the CDC’s Chamblee Campus in Atlanta, GA.

What you'll do:

  • Analyze environmental sampling and site investigation data associated with uncontrolled hazardous waste sites and controlled hazardous waste facilities.
  • Evaluate environmental data for quality assurance and quality control, completeness, usability, and relevance to public health decision-making.
  • Assess site-specific public health implications of identified hazardous substances, including the potential for human exposure.
  • Develop technically sound responses and recommendations for health consultations requested by federal, state, and local agencies and members of the public.
  • Assist with development, review, and revision of public health assessments, health consultations, technical memoranda, and related work products.
  • Evaluate proposed site investigation and remedial approaches from an environmental health perspective.
  • Synthesize environmental, exposure, and health information into clear tables, figures, presentations, reports, and client-ready narratives.
  • Participate in technical assistance site visits, project meetings, and public meetings.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in environmental science, geology, environmental engineering, environmental health, biology, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience evaluating environmental contamination, hazardous waste sites or facilities, environmental sampling data, site cleanup, human exposure pathways, and environmental health issues.
  • Minimum 1 year experience with various contaminated site characterization and remediation programs and regulations (e.g., CERCLA/Superfund, RCRA, Brownfields) as well as with ATSDR public health assessment processes.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required per Federal contract
  • Ability to obtain Federal government security clearance
  • Ability to travel for approved technical assistance site visits, public meetings, or other project needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with CDC, ATSDR, EPA, other federal agencies, or related public health entities.
  • Working knowledge of contaminant sources and media, environmental fate and transport mechanisms, and human exposure pathway analysis.
  • Experience preparing or contributing to environmental health assessments, health consultations, exposure evaluations, remedial evaluations, or comparable technical documents.
  • Experience with interpreting technical reports, sampling plans, analytical results, conceptual site models (CSMs), maps, and supporting environmental records.

Professional skills we are looking for:

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented team member who can manage multiple priorities and produce accurate, timely, and defensible work products.
  • Collaborative approach and ability to integrate input from multiple scientific disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Strong scientific writing, critical thinking, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex findings to clients, partner agencies, communities, and the public.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with environmental databases, GIS, statistical, data-visualization, and fate and transport modelling tools/software.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
