This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Java Developer (Data | AWS) (IT Consultant) based in South Africa.

Join a high-impact technology engagement focused on building and maintaining scalable, cloud-native data services. In this hands-on backend engineering role, you will develop reliable systems that ingest, transform, and serve large volumes of structured and streaming data. You will leverage Java, SQL, and AWS technologies to deliver efficient data workflows that support product teams and customers. Working closely with product stakeholders, you will contribute to robust data infrastructure, improve data accessibility, and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of critical information. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges in a data-intensive environment. The role offers remote flexibility, an international working context, and the opportunity to make an immediate impact on a client engagement.

Accountabilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services built on top of a large-scale data platform.
  • Build and optimize data processing workflows for both batch and streaming use cases.
  • Leverage AWS services, including S3, Redshift, Athena, Kinesis, Glue, Step Functions, Lambda, and SQS, to support cloud-native data solutions.
  • Collaborate with product teams and key stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver high-quality technical solutions.
  • Develop and maintain APIs, data models, and data integration processes to ensure reliable data access and processing.
  • Document technical architectures, APIs, data workflows, and operational procedures to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute to the performance, scalability, reliability, and continuous improvement of backend and data-intensive systems.
  • Technical expertise: Strong proficiency in Java and SQL, with familiarity with Python considered an advantage.
  • Data engineering: Demonstrated experience working with large datasets and designing or supporting data-intensive systems involving batch processing and streaming.
  • AWS experience: Hands-on knowledge of AWS services such as S3, Redshift, Athena, Kinesis, Glue, Step Functions, Lambda, and SQS.
  • Database skills: Strong database knowledge, with experience in PostgreSQL and Amazon Redshift considered beneficial.
  • Backend development: Experience designing, developing, and maintaining reliable backend services and data-driven applications.
  • Communication and documentation: Strong written communication skills and the ability to document APIs, data models, workflows, and technical processes clearly.
  • Education: A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Location and availability: Must be based in South Africa, available to work remotely with a schedule that partially overlaps with US working hours, and able to start immediately or with a maximum notice period of one week.
  • Contract readiness: Must be willing to work as an independent contractor for an initial three-to-six-month engagement, with the ability to invoice monthly.
  • Remote work: Work remotely from anywhere within South Africa.
  • Contract flexibility: An initial three-to-six-month independent contractor engagement, with the possibility of renewal.
  • International collaboration: Work with product teams and stakeholders in a professional environment that partially aligns with US working hours.
