The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Commercial Data Management & Governance based in the United States.

We are seeking an experienced commercial data governance leader to establish and oversee the data management framework supporting a growing life sciences organization. In this strategic leadership role, you will build a new governance capability, ensuring commercial data is accurate, consistent, secure, and reliable across systems and business functions. You will define common data standards, ownership models, quality controls, and certified business metrics to create a trusted foundation for analytics and reporting. Working closely with Commercial, IT, Legal, Compliance, Privacy, and external data partners, you will translate complex business needs into practical governance policies and requirements. Your expertise will help ensure consistency across critical domains, including healthcare professionals and organizations, products, prescriptions, payers, and specialty distribution. You will also advise senior leaders, resolve complex data challenges, and establish long-term standards that support product launches, commercial effectiveness, and regulatory compliance. This fully remote opportunity offers significant autonomy and the chance to shape a foundational capability with lasting business impact.

Accountabilities

  • Data governance strategy and operating model: Establish and lead a scalable commercial data governance framework, including policies, standards, stewardship responsibilities, and a cross-functional governance council.
  • Define data ownership, accountability, and decision rights across Commercial, IT, and external partners through a business glossary, stewardship model, and RACI framework.
  • Prioritize governance initiatives based on business value, including product launch readiness, field deployment, analytics, and reporting requirements.
  • Commercial data management: Serve as the business owner of commercial data across CRM, data warehouse, analytics, and reporting environments, ensuring data accuracy, completeness, consistency, and fitness for purpose.
  • Translate business and analytics needs into clear data requirements, definitions, and acceptance criteria, while overseeing technical integration and engineering work delivered by IT.
  • Establish validation processes, review checkpoints, and change-management controls to maintain data reliability as new systems, sources, and use cases are introduced.
  • Metric and business-rule governance: Create and maintain a certified library of commercial metric and business-rule definitions covering prescription and prescriber metrics, field activity, targeting, segmentation, and alignment logic.
  • Govern documentation, versioning, approvals, and change-control processes for metric definitions, including the communication of restatements and resolution of conflicting calculations.
  • Partner with Commercial Analytics and reporting teams to ensure consistent implementation of approved business rules across systems and dashboards.
  • Master and reference data governance: Define business standards for customer master data covering healthcare professionals (HCPs) and healthcare organizations (HCOs), working with IT's master data management teams and third-party reference providers.
  • Establish business requirements for match/merge, survivorship, hierarchy, affiliation, and identity-resolution rules to support accurate customer records and reporting.
  • Govern product, payer, territory, and alignment reference data to ensure consistency across commercial platforms.
  • Data quality and stewardship: Establish data quality standards, performance metrics, monitoring processes, and remediation workflows across critical commercial data domains.
  • Collaborate with IT data stewards to profile data, define quality rules, resolve issues at their source, and monitor improvements over time.
  • Metadata, lineage, and cataloging: Develop and govern data cataloging, business glossary, metadata, and lineage practices, documenting data flows from source systems and third-party feeds through analytics and reporting.
  • Privacy, compliance, and access governance: Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Privacy teams to implement controls supporting HIPAA, PDMA, state privacy laws, Open Payments reporting, PDRP/opt-out, and consent requirements.
  • Govern data classification, access permissions, and appropriate-use standards for sensitive commercial and third-party information, ensuring compliance with contractual restrictions and data-use agreements.
  • Maintain documentation of data controls and support audit readiness.
  • Partnership and cross-functional leadership: Build trusted relationships with Commercial Analytics, Field Operations, Market Access, Patient Services, Trade and Distribution, Omnichannel, IT, and external data vendors.
  • Chair the data governance council and drive awareness, training, and change management to establish a strong data-governance culture.
  • Represent the organization with external data partners and industry forums, bringing relevant standards and best practices into governance initiatives.
  • Strategic advisory: Act as the principal commercial data governance advisor to senior leaders, guiding decisions on complex and ambiguous data challenges.
  • Develop a long-term governance strategy and roadmap, exercising independent judgment and setting priorities that support strategic business objectives.
  • Demonstrate leadership behaviors aligned with organizational culture, core principles, and collaborative working practices.
  • Minimum of 15 years of related professional experience with a bachelor's degree, or 12 years with a master's degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive experience in data governance, data management, data quality, or commercial data operations.
  • Significant experience supporting commercial data within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or broader life sciences industry.
  • Proven track record of establishing or maturing data governance programs, policies, standards, and stewardship models.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and drive adoption through influence and stakeholder engagement.
  • Deep understanding of pharmaceutical commercial data domains and sources, including HCP/HCO customer master data, Veeva OpenData/Network, IQVIA OneKey, prescription data, specialty pharmacy and hub data, claims, and payer information.
  • Strong knowledge of master data management principles, including match/merge, survivorship, hierarchies, affiliations, and identity resolution.
  • Familiarity with commercial pharmaceutical privacy and compliance requirements, including HIPAA, PDMA, PDRP/opt-out, Open Payments and aggregate-spend reporting, state privacy laws, and third-party data-use restrictions.
  • Proven ability to act as a business data owner, translating commercial requirements into actionable specifications and overseeing technical integration work.
  • Experience defining and governing certified metrics, business rules, and semantic layers to ensure consistent reporting across systems, dashboards, and business use cases.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to align technical and business teams and drive organizational adoption.
  • Working knowledge of CRM platforms such as Veeva and the Databricks analytics platform, particularly in relation to governed commercial data.
  • Familiarity with master data management and data governance platforms such as Veeva Network, Reltio, Informatica, Collibra, or Alation.
  • Familiarity with SQL for data profiling, validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Exposure to data access governance and security tools such as Immuta and Databricks Unity Catalog.
  • Experience establishing commercial data governance capabilities ahead of or during a product launch.
  • Experience with incentive compensation, territory alignment, targeting, or field reporting data.
  • A data governance or data management certification, such as CDMP (DAMA) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Annual salary range: $215,000–$235,000.
  • Work arrangement: Fully remote, with a preference for candidates based in or near Boston, Massachusetts.
  • Professional impact: Opportunity to establish a new commercial data governance capability and influence long-term organizational strategy.
  • Career development: Work alongside senior leaders and cross-functional teams in a growing life sciences environment.
  • Additional benefits: An extensive employee benefits package is offered; further details are available through the employer's benefits information.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
