The posting

The IT University of Copenhagen invites highly motivated individuals to apply for a Teaching Assistant Professor position starting in January or soon thereafter.

We invite applicants who want to contribute to the IT University's vision of creating and sharing knowledge that is profound and leads to ground-breaking information technology and services for the benefit of humanity.

Job description The ITU is looking for a teaching assistant professor to support the daily technical and practical operation of education in, and maintenance of, ITU's REAL Lab, and to contribute to the development, fabrication, assembly, and testing of mechanical prototypes and robotic systems. The selected applicant will work closely with academic staff, teachers, researchers, and students to support teaching, research, and project activities involving hardware development and physical prototyping. The selected applicant will provide technical support for the development of electronic and mechanical prototypes, including assisting with printed circuit board assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.

An important part of the position is supporting teaching activities in the REAL Lab. This includes guiding students in the safe and correct use of laboratory equipment, machines, and tools, as well as teaching workshops, lectures, and training sessions related to prototyping, electronics, robotics, 3D printing, fabrication methods, and safe lab practices. The selected applicant will also support BSc and MSc students developing hardware prototypes as part of thesis and research projects, providing practical guidance throughout the prototyping and fabrication process.

The position will contribute to the day-to-day management and readiness of the REAL Lab, including workspace organization, access, maintenance, and ensuring that equipment and workspaces are available and functional for teaching and research activities. The Lab Manager will be responsible for ordering and restocking materials, tools, electronic components, and other consumables, as well as maintaining an overview of the lab's inventory. In addition, the Lab Manager is also responsible for maintaining, detecting problems, and repairing the lab's 3D printers, tools, and other technical equipment. This includes continuously improving and implementing procedures that ensure the safe, efficient, and consistent use of equipment, tools, materials, and workspaces.

Finally, the position will coordinate resources, technical knowledge, and relevant information with other laboratories at ITU and contribute to collaboration across ITU's laboratory environments.

Required Skills:

  • We expect the applicant to have practical experience with mechanical fabrication, electronics, hardware prototyping, and the development and assembly of robotic or mechatronic systems. The candidate should have experience using digital fabrication equipment, particularly 3D printers, as well as common workshop tools and equipment used for mechanical prototyping. The candidate should have experience with electronics assembly and troubleshooting, including soldering, printed circuit board assembly, testing, and fault finding. Experience working with sensors, actuators, motors, microcontrollers, and other components commonly used in robotics is an advantage.
  • The candidate should have a broad understanding of materials, fabrication processes, mechanical design, and iterative prototyping and be comfortable identifying and repairing issues in both mechanical and electronic systems. Practical experience maintaining and repairing fabrication equipment, particularly 3D printers and workshop tools, is highly desirable.
  • We expect the applicant to be able to work independently while collaborating closely with students, researchers, academic staff, and technical colleagues. Experience supporting teaching, student projects, or research activities in a university, laboratory, makerspace, workshop, or similar environment is an advantage. Relevant experience from industry or other professional technical environments is equally valued. An ideal applicant is pedagogical, service-minded, and able to communicate technical knowledge clearly to people with different levels of experience.
