Full job descriptionCommunity Care Worker – Children & Families

Derbyshire County Council

Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)

Contract: Temporary assignment – 22 October 2026 to 31 December 2026

Support Children, Strengthen Families and Help Make a Positive Difference

We're recruiting two compassionate and proactive Community Care Workers to support Derbyshire County Council's Children & Families services. This draft role focuses on direct work with children, supporting family relationships and helping families progress agreed plans in partnership with social care colleagues. These activities reflect the council's published Community Care Worker role information. eastmidlandsjobs.org.uk

You'll bring an approachable, professional and non-judgemental attitude, building constructive relationships while keeping children's needs, safety and wellbeing at the centre of your work.

About the Role

As Community Care Worker – Children & Families, you'll provide practical and emotional support to children, young people, parents and carers. You'll help families engage with agreed support, contribute observations to assessments and work alongside colleagues to monitor progress.

The proposed role involves supporting families experiencing a range of difficulties, helping them build on their strengths and overcome barriers to change. This approach is consistent with Derbyshire's published family support roles; the specific team and duties for these assignments remain to be confirmed. jobs.derbyshire.gov.uk

What you'll be doing:

  • Undertaking direct work with children and young people, using age-appropriate communication to understand their experiences, wishes and feelings.
  • Supporting agreed plans for children and families, helping individuals engage with services and work towards achievable goals.
  • Contributing to assessments under appropriate guidance, providing factual observations and information about family strengths, needs and progress. These are indicative responsibilities drawn from the council's Community Care Worker information. eastmidlandsjobs.org.uk
  • Supporting family-time arrangements where allocated, helping maintain a safe, positive environment and recording observations in accordance with service procedures. The council describes these activities within its related family-time support roles. jobs.derbyshire.gov.uk
  • Working with social workers, schools, health professionals and other agencies, sharing relevant information appropriately and following up agreed actions.
  • Helping families access suitable community support, identifying barriers to engagement and encouraging participation in relevant services.
  • Recognising and reporting safeguarding concerns, following organisational procedures and seeking guidance promptly.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records, documenting visits, conversations, progress and concerns.
  • Contributing to case discussions and reviews, providing clear updates and identifying changes that may require further assessment.
  • Managing allocated work responsibly, following lone-working and safety arrangements, maintaining professional boundaries and making effective use of supervision.

Requirements

We're looking for empathetic, reliable and organised individuals who can build positive relationships with families while maintaining a clear focus on children's welfare.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience working with children, young people and families in social care, family support, education, youth work or a related setting.
  • An understanding of child development and safeguarding, including recognising concerns and escalating them appropriately.
  • Experience building rapport with families, including those experiencing emotional, practical or relationship difficulties.
  • Strong communication and recording skills, with the ability to explain information clearly and produce accurate written accounts. These areas are reflected in the council's published family support requirements. jobs.derbyshire.gov.uk
  • A patient and non-judgemental approach, respecting individual circumstances, backgrounds and choices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other professionals, contribute to agreed plans and follow through on actions.
  • Good organisational and IT skills, including confidence maintaining electronic records and managing competing priorities.
  • Awareness of confidentiality and professional boundaries, with the judgement to seek advice when needed.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK and the ability to provide employment references and complete the required pre-employment checks.

Why Apply

  • Opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children, young people and their families.
  • Varied role combining direct support, family engagement and partnership working.
  • Chance to apply your care or family support experience within a local authority setting.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
