The posting

Contract to start ASAP until 30-09-26 with a possible extension.

Job Purpose

To safely and efficiently operate Council HGV vehicles in support of South Hams District Council's operational services.

The role involves driving and operating heavy goods vehicles, completing scheduled routes and collections, carrying out vehicle checks, and supporting the delivery of a safe, reliable and professional service to residents and the wider community.

Responsibilities

Drive and operate Council HGV vehicles safely and responsibly in accordance with relevant legislation and Council procedures.

Undertake scheduled routes, collections, deliveries and operational duties as required.

Complete daily vehicle safety checks before and during operation and report defects promptly.

Ensure vehicles are loaded, secured and operated safely and within permitted weight limits.

Operate vehicle-mounted equipment and machinery where required and following appropriate training.

Follow planned routes, schedules and operational instructions.

Work effectively with colleagues and operational teams to ensure services are delivered efficiently.

Maintain accurate records relating to vehicle checks, mileage, collections, deliveries and other operational activities.

Ensure vehicles and associated equipment are kept clean, secure and in a safe working condition.

Report accidents, incidents, vehicle defects, access issues and other operational concerns in accordance with Council procedures.

Comply with health and safety requirements, risk assessments and safe systems of work.

Provide a courteous and professional service when dealing with residents, contractors and members of the public.

Assist colleagues with reasonable operational duties when required.

Undertake other duties appropriate to the role and service requirements.
