Protect Personal Information and Support Transparent Public Services

We're recruiting an organised and detail-focused Information Governance Officer to support Derby City Council with information requests, data protection enquiries and the responsible handling of sensitive information. The council's Information Governance service manages information rights requests, advises internal teams and supports responses to regulatory enquiries and complaints. derby.gov.uk

You'll work closely with colleagues across council services, helping gather information, review records and prepare clear responses while maintaining confidentiality and accurate case documentation.

About the Role

As Information Governance Officer, you'll support the coordination and processing of information requests, balancing access to information with the protection of personal and confidential records.

The role requires sound judgement, strong written communication and the ability to manage competing deadlines. You'll help colleagues understand information-handling requirements, identify concerns and escalate complex matters for specialist advice.

What you'll be doing:

  • Managing allocated subject access and other data rights requests, coordinating relevant records and supporting appropriate responses to individuals. derby.gov.uk
  • Processing Freedom of Information and Environmental Information requests, clarifying requirements, gathering information and monitoring applicable deadlines.
  • Supporting decisions about disclosure, identifying information that may require withholding and seeking guidance on relevant exemptions or exceptions. derby.gov.uk
  • Reviewing documents and applying appropriate redactions, helping protect third-party personal information and recording the reasons for disclosure decisions.
  • Assisting with complaints, internal reviews and Information Commissioner's Office enquiries, gathering supporting evidence and maintaining clear records of actions taken. derby.gov.uk
  • Providing practical guidance to colleagues on information handling, including confidentiality, information sharing and records management, in line with council procedures. derbycsc.trixonline.co.uk
  • Supporting publication and transparency activities, helping maintain information made available through the council's publication scheme and disclosure arrangements. derby.gov.uk
  • Maintaining accurate case logs and correspondence, recording progress, outstanding actions and decisions.
  • Working collaboratively with service teams, following up information requests, resolving queries and escalating delays.
  • Contributing to process improvements, identifying opportunities to strengthen accuracy, consistency and the experience of people requesting information.

Requirements

We're looking for a proactive, analytical and discreet individual who can handle sensitive information responsibly and communicate clearly with colleagues and members of the public.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience in information governance, data protection, information rights or a comparable records and compliance role.
  • Working knowledge of the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Environmental Information Regulations 2004, which form part of the council's published information governance framework. derby.gov.uk
  • Experience coordinating subject access requests or other information requests, including gathering records and preparing responses.
  • Confidence reviewing sensitive documents, identifying information requiring further consideration and applying redactions appropriately.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to explain decisions and complex information clearly.
  • Excellent attention to detail, including maintaining accurate records and checking information before disclosure.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage several cases and competing deadlines.
  • Good IT skills, including confidence using Microsoft Office, electronic records and relevant case management systems.
  • A professional approach to confidentiality, with the judgement to recognise risks and seek specialist guidance.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK and the ability to provide employment references and complete the required pre-employment checks.

Why Apply

  • Opportunity to contribute to the protection of personal information and public access to council information.
  • Varied role combining casework, document review, advice and service improvement.
  • Chance to apply and develop your information governance experience within a local authority setting.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
