Мониторинг состояния личного состава: непрерывное наблюдение за здоровьем военнослужащих подразделения и своевременное выявление заболевших. Оказание неотложной помощи: оперативное проведение первой помощи при травмах, несчастных случаях и внезапных острых заболеваниях. Организация транспортировки: подготовка пострадавших к эвакуации и контроль их доставки в медицинский пункт части. Профилактика заболеваний: проведение регулярных телесных осмотров личного состава на предмет кожных и инфекционных заболеваний. Контроль санитарно-гигиенического состояния: проверка чистоты жилых, служебных и бытовых помещений, а также мест размещения подразделения. Санитарный надзор за питанием: контроль качества питьевой воды, условий хранения продуктов и санитарного состояния объектов общественного питания. Медицинское обучение: проведение занятий с личным составом подразделения по правилам гигиены, оказанию само- и взаимопомощи. Учет и снабжение: контроль наличия, правильного хранения и своевременного пополнения запасов индивидуальных аптечек и медицинского имущества подразделения. Руководство подчиненными: координация работы стрелков-санитаров и другого приданного санитарного персонала. Взаимодействие и отчетность: сбор данных о санитарно-эпидемиологической обстановке и своевременный доклад командованию подразделения и старшему медицинскому начальнику.

Соответствие установленным возрастным рамкам и категориям годности по здоровью согласно Федеральному закону № 53-ФЗ О воинской обязанности и военной службе (включая категории годности А годен к военной службе, Б годен к военной службе с незначительными ограничениями или В ограниченно годен к военной службе), наличие базового среднего общего образования (11 классов), при этом профильный медицинский диплом (фельдшер, медицинский брат/сестра) является преимуществом, но не обязателен, так как кандидаты без специального образования в обязательном порядке направляются на курсы профессиональной подготовки санитарных инструкторов в учебный центр для освоения военно-учетной специальности (ВУС-878 или ВУС-879), а также успешное прохождение социально-психологического изучения с присвоением категории профессиональной пригодности не ниже III (удовлетворительно) .
