Организовать и непосредственно руководить всеми научными исследованиями, проводимыми в заповеднике. Обеспечить использование в работе научного отдела достижений отечественной и зарубежной науки и техники, патентных и научно-организационных материалов, вычислительной и организационной техники, современных методов научных исследований. Контролировать выполнение рабочих планов, программ и отчетов научных работников, а также сметы расходов на научную работу. Организует и осуществляет общее методическое руководство по сбору материалов, составлению и редактированию книг Летописи природы . Организовывать подготовку к печати сборников научных трудов заповедника. Осуществлять контроль над проведением научно-исследовательской работы на территории заповедника сторонними специалистами и учреждениями, студенческой практики и экскурсионной работы. Организовать и осуществлять руководство технической учёбой научно-технического персонала и инспекции по охране территории по первичным научным наблюдениям; Осуществлять контроль над состоянием и ведением научного фонда заповедника; Осуществлять контроль над состоянием, пополнением и работой научной библиотеки заповедника. Осуществлять руководство разработкой материалов по методическому и научному обеспечению мероприятий по охране территории заповедника и борьбе с нарушениями заповедного режима, принимать непосредственное участие в руководстве такими мероприятиями. Осуществлять контроль над соблюдением трудовой дисциплины научными сотрудниками и научно-техническим персоналом заповедника. Осуществлять контроль над соблюдением правил техники безопасности при проведении на территории заповедника научно-исследовательских работ. Осуществлять переписку и обеспечить отчетность по вопросам научной деятельности заповедника. Готовить заключения о работе сотрудников научного отдела. Участвовать в подборе кадров для научного отдела. Принимать участие в решении основных вопросов хозяйственной деятельности заповедника. Участвовать в разработке мененджмент-планов заповедника, проектно-сметных документаций, обоснований заявок на финансирование, перспективных планов работы в научной работы. Осуществляет выполнение работ в соответствии с государственным заданием. Выполнять отдельные служебные поручения директора заповедника.

На должность начальника отдела назнаяается лицо, имеющее высшее профильное образование и стаж работы на руководящих должностях не менее 3 лет.
