Обеспечить работу по библиотечному, информационному, справочно-библиографическому обслуживанию пользователей, включающую в себя индивидуальные и массовые формы обслуживания; разрабатывать перспективные, текущие, тематические, месячные и годовые планы работы библиотеки и их выполнение; составлять программы деятельности библиотеки по различным направлениям, отчеты о работе; вести учет работы библиотеки и всю библиотечную документацию: дневники работы библиотеки, читательские формуляры, тетрадь замены книг, утерянных читателями, акты на списания литературы; организовывать при библиотеке работу любительских клубов и объединений по интересам для различных категорий пользователей; проводить различные формы массовых мероприятий для всех групп читателей; участвовать в комплектовании фонда библиотеки; организовывать его сохранность, использование и изучение; работать с книжным фондам, каталогами и картотеками (изучение, пополнение, редактирование, списание, ремонт и т.д.); организовывать работу места общественного доступа к электронным фондам с выходом в сеть интернет; обеспечить надлежащий контроль за выносом выданных читателям документов; поддерживать предусмотренные меры по сохранности библиотечного фонда при открытом доступе: проводить профилактические беседы с читателями, принимать меры для своевременного возврата документов и т.д.

Способность планировать и управлять библиотечными фондами, создавать условия для удобного использования электронных и печатных материалов. Также нужно уметь вести отчетность библиотеки.
