Следит за сохранностью экспонатов. Визуально проверяет состояние предметов, витрин, замков и печатей, чтобы предотвратить повреждения или хищение. Контролирует посетителей. Следит, чтобы гости соблюдали правила: не прикасались к экспонатам, не шумели, не проносили продукты, не вели видеосъёмку (если это запрещено). При необходимости тактично делает замечания. Поддерживает нужный микроклимат. Регулярно фиксирует показания приборов (температура, влажность) и сообщает руководству, если параметры выходят за допустимые нормы. Помогает посетителям. Отвечает на вопросы об экспозиции, подсказывает, как лучше осмотреть выставку, иногда проводит короткие мини-экскурсии. Работает с техникой. В современных музеях смотрители используют системы видеонаблюдения, журналы учёта, помогают посетителям с QR-кодами. Реагирует на нештатные ситуации. При угрозе пожара, попытке кражи или другом инциденте координирует эвакуацию, вызывает охрану или руководство. Сдают объект на сигнализацию. Участвует в организационных моментах. Помогает при монтаже и демонтаже выставок, взаимодействует с техническим персоналом.

Личные качества. Важны внимательность, ответственность, терпение, доброжелательность и умение сохранять спокойствие в сложных ситуациях Знания. Нужно знать основы музееведения, правила хранения и экспонирования, требования к микроклимату для разных материалов, правила пожарной и общей безопасности, схему эвакуации. Полезно общее понимание истории, искусства и культуры, особенно того периода или региона, которые представлены в музее. Готовность сдавать объект под охрану по окончании рабочего дня и снимать с охраны объект перед началом работы; Физическая выносливость. Значительная часть смены проходит в статичной позе (стоя или сидя), что может быть утомительно; высокая концентрация внимания на протяжении всей смены; иногда приходится многократно повторять одну и ту же информацию для разных посетителей. Готовность общаться с разными посетителями детьми, пожилыми людьми, ценителями искусства. Умение вежливо объяснять правила поведения в музее и грамотно реагировать на нарушения порядка. Способность развернуто отвечать на вопросы посетителей или перенаправлять их к экскурсоводам или другим сотрудникам. Умение замечать малейшие изменения в состоянии экспонатов. Способность находиться длительное время на ногах. Готовность быстро реагировать на нештатные ситуации (повреждение экспонатов, конфликты). Готовность работать в выходные и праздничные дни.
