Разрабатывать и перемещать грунт послойно, в том числе на расстояние до 150 м. Выполнять планировку площадей с заданными уклонами и отметками, в том числе с использованием систем GPS‑нивелирования (на современных машинах). Производить обратную засыпку траншей и пазух котлованов с послойным уплотнением. Возводить насыпи, дамбы, валы, соблюдая проектные параметры и уклоны. Рыхлить мёрзлые, плотные или скальные грунты с помощью рыхлительного оборудования. Расчищать территории от снега, кустарника, пней, строительного мусора, выравнивать площадки. Работать в стеснённых условиях и на уклонах, соблюдая правила безопасности (например, не работать в призме обрушения, держать безопасные расстояния Выполнять ежедневное и плановое техническое обслуживание (смазка узлов, замена фильтров, подтяжка креплений, очистка машины). Контролировать состояние ходовой части, гидравлики, трансмиссии, своевременно выявлять и сообщать о неисправностях механику. Вести эксплуатационную документацию: заполнять путевые листы, журналы учёта работ и ТО.

Машинист должен разбираться в устройстве бульдозера, понимать принцип его работы. В зависимости от разряда объём знаний расширяется: правила технической эксплуатации машины; виды грунтов и технологии их разработки (резание, перемещение, послойная отсыпка); правила планировки площадей, возведения насыпей, обратной засыпки траншей; основы гидравлики и механики; чтение чертежей, схем, технологических документов; причины возможных неисправностей и способы их устранения; правила использования средств индивидуальной защиты; требования охраны труда, промышленной и экологической безопасности.
