Выполнять назначенные лечащим врачом процедуры, разрешённые к выполнению средним медицинским персоналом. Помогать при проведении манипуляций, которые имеет право выполнять только врач. Например, постановка катетеров, желудочно-дуоденальное зондирование. Проводить медицинские процедуры: внутривенные, внутримышечные и подкожные инъекции, взятие крови из вены для лабораторных исследований, капельницы и внутривенные вливания. Подготавливать кабинет, материалы и инструментарий к работе: обрабатывать и стерилизовать медицинский инструментарий, готовить рабочее место к процедурам. Обеспечивать соблюдение правил асептики и антисептики в процедурном кабинете при проведении процедур. Стерилизовать инструментарий и материал . Составлять требования на получение инструментария, оборудования, медикаментов и перевязочного материала и получать их в установленном порядке. Контролировать санитарно-гигиеническое содержание процедурного кабинета. Осуществлять сбор и утилизацию медицинских отходов . Проводить мероприятия по соблюдению санитарно-гигиенического режима в помещении, правил асептики и антисептики, условий стерилизации инструментов и материалов, предупреждению постинъекционных осложнений, гепатита, ВИЧ-инфекции.

Для работы в должности процедурной медсестры необходимо иметь среднее профессиональное образование по одной из специальностей: Лечебное дело, Акушерское дело или Сестринское дело . Дополнительно необходим сертификат по специальности Сестринское дело, Общая практика или Сестринское дело в педиатрии . Каждые пять лет медицинская сестра процедурной обязана проходить курсы повышения квалификации продолжительностью не менее 144 часов. Помимо обязательного образования, процедурные медсестры часто проходят дополнительные курсы по специализированным направлениям парентеральному введению препаратов, катетеризации периферических вен, работе с центральными венозными катетерами.
