Помогает осваивать современные программы и протоколы сканирования, адаптировать новые технологии для работы кабинета. Контроль эксплуатации оборудования. Следить, чтобы томограф работал правильно, подбирать оптимальные технические режимы для разных исследований. Участие в сложных исследованиях. Помогать настраивать оборудование в нестандартных ситуациях, чтобы обеспечить качество изображения и корректность данных. Также участвовать в анализе сложных случаев содействовать в том, чтобы физическая интерпретация результатов была точной. Своевременно сообщать администрации о техническом состоянии аппарата, а также о потребностях: нужны ли комплектующие, расходные материалы, запасные части или контрольно-измерительные приборы. Решать вопросы с сервисными организациями и фирмой-изготовителем: организовывать поставку запчастей, координировать ремонт, вопросы послегарантийного обслуживания. Следить за МРТ: изучать новые разработки, чтобы в работе кабинета использовать более эффективные решения. В своей работе инженер обязан строго следовать правилам охраны труда, пожарной безопасности и внутреннего трудового распорядка.

Согласно нормативным документам (в частности, Приказу Минздравмедпрома РФ от 05.04.1996 №128), специалист должен иметь высшее физическое или техническое образование. Дополнительно ценится наличие опыта программирования на ЭВМ и прохождение специальной подготовки для работы на оборудовании МРТ.
