Приём и сдача дежурства. Перед заступлением сторож вместе со сменяемым коллегой обходит здание: проверяет целостность дверей, окон, замков, наличие пломб, противопожарного инвентаря, исправность сигнализации, телефонов, освещения. Также нужно сверить ключи и документацию на посту. О любых неисправностях (взломанные элементы, отсутствие пломб) следует сразу сообщить заведующему общежитием или ответственному за безопасность. При сдаче дежурства аналогично зафиксировать всё в журнале. Пропускной режим. Сторож контролирует вход и выход людей. Он проверяет документы и пропуска, регистрирует посетителей в журнале, не допускает в общежитие посторонних без разрешения. При необходимости может провести досмотр вещей. Также он следит за парковкой автотранспорта рядом с общежитием. Контроль обстановки. Нужно постоянно следить за тем, что происходит в здании и по периметру. Для этого могут использоваться системы видеонаблюдения. При обнаружении подозрительных лиц, предметов, признаков нарушений (например, попытки проноса запрещённых вещей) сторож обязан отреагировать: сообщить дежурному по общежитию, а при необходимости вызвать полицию, скорую помощь или пожарную команду. Действия в чрезвычайных ситуациях. Если сработала сигнализация, случился пожар или возникла другая угроза, сторож поднимает тревогу, извещает ответственных лиц, принимает меры по ликвидации угрозы (если это безопасно), а при необходимости вызывает специализированные службы. Взаимодействие с администрацией. Сторож выполняет поручения непосредственного руководителя (заведующего общежитием, дежурного администратора). Если смена не прибыла или сменщик заболел, сторож должен сообщить об этом руководству и не покидать пост без разрешения.

Дисциплинированность, ответсвенность, отсутствие противопоказаний для работы в образовательном учреждении.
