Осуществляет музыкальное воспитание и эстетическое развитие учащихся в рамках образовательной программы школы. Проводит музыкальные занятия (уроки, факультативы, кружки), развивает музыкальные способности, чувство ритма, слух, формирует певческие навыки, учит играть на детских инструментах. Выявляет музыкально одарённых детей и ведёт с ними индивидуальную работу. Проводит музыкально-дидактические, театрализованные и музыкально-ритмические игры. Знакомит учащихся с классической и народной музыкой, разными жанрами, творчеством композиторов и исполнителей. Создаёт условия для развития творческой активности детей, поощряет импровизацию. Участвует в проведении школьных праздников, концертов, тематических вечеров. Обеспечивает музыкальное сопровождение спортивных мероприятий и других событий. Готовит с детьми выступления для муниципальных и региональных конкурсов. Ведёт необходимую документацию: планы занятий, конспекты мероприятий, отчёты.

Музыкальный руководитель должен знать: приоритетные направления развития образовательной системы РФ, законы и иные нормативные акты об образовании, Конвенцию ООН о правах ребёнка; педагогику, психологию, возрастную физиологию и анатомию, основы санитарии и гигиены; индивидуальные и возрастные особенности развития детей, музыкального восприятия, эмоций, моторики и музыкальных возможностей; методы и формы мониторинга музыкально-художественной деятельности; музыкальные произведения детского репертуара; современные образовательные музыкальные технологии, достижения мировой и отечественной музыкальной культуры; основы работы с текстовыми и графическими редакторами, электронными таблицами, электронной почтой, браузерами, мультимедийным оборудованием, музыкальными редакторами; правила внутреннего трудового распорядка, охраны труда, пожарной безопасности, инструкцию по охране жизни и здоровья детей; санитарно-эпидемиологические требования к организации образовательного процесса
