Инженер-теплотехник это специалист, который отвечает за техобслуживание и бесперебойную работу систем теплоснабжения: котельных, теплосетей, оборудования. Он контролирует расход энергии, следит, соблюдаются ли нормы безопасности, ведёт техническую документацию. Инженер-теплотехник: следит за работой котлов, насосов и сетей; контролирует температуру и давление; проверяет приборы; выявляет и устраняет неполадки в системе; составляет графики планового ремонта; подготавливает котлы, насосы и другие объекты к отопительному сезону, проводит испытания; ведёт учёт расхода тепловой энергии для расчётов с энергоснабжающей организацией и абонентами; разрабатывает нормы расхода теплоэнергии и контролирует, нет ли потерь; ведёт журналы учёта тепла и топлива, оформляет акты досмотров и дефектные ведомости; взаимодействует с госорганами и проверяющими.

Должен знать законодательные и нормативные правовые акты, распорядительные и нормативные материалы по теплоснабжению потребителей, по нормированию расхода тепловой энергии и энергосбережению; правила пользования тепловой энергией; правила технической эксплуатации тепловых станций и сетей; структуру управления тепловым хозяйством; оперативную схему теплового оборудования и коммуникаций, их техническое описание; критерии и пределы безопасного состояния и режимов работы тепловых сетей; основы планирования, стратегическое и оперативное планирование; основы экономики, организации труда и управления; стандарты делопроизводства; классификацию документов; основы трудового законодательства; Правила внутреннего трудового распорядка; правила и нормы охраны труда, техники безопасности, производственной санитарии и противопожарной защиты.
