Палатная медицинская сестра выполняет врачебные назначения больным в закреплённых за ней палатах, наблюдает за состоянием пациентов, осуществляет уход за ними и организует их питание.

Уход и наблюдение за больными на основе принципов медицинской деонтологии. Приём и размещение в палате вновь поступивших больных, проверка качества санитарной обработки. Проверка передач больным, чтобы не допустить приёма противопоказанной пищи и напитков. Участие в обходе врачей в закреплённых за сестрой палатах, доклад о состоянии больных, фиксация в журнале назначенного лечения и ухода. Санитарно-гигиеническое обслуживание физически ослабленных и тяжелобольных. Организация обследования больных в диагностических кабинетах, у врачей-консультантов и в лаборатории. Немедленное сообщение лечащему врачу, а в его отсутствие заведующему отделением или дежурному врачу о внезапном ухудшении состояния больного. Изоляция больных в агональном состоянии, вызов врача для проведения реанимационных мероприятий. Подготовка трупов умерших для направления их в патологоанатомическое отделение. Приём дежурства: осмотр закреплённых помещений, проверка состояния электроосвещения, наличия инвентаря, медицинского оборудования и медикаментов. Контроль выполнения больными и их родственниками режима посещений отделения. Слежение за санитарным содержанием закреплённых палат, а также личной гигиеной больных, своевременным приёмом гигиенических ванн, сменой нательного и постельного белья. Контроль того, чтобы больные получали пищу согласно назначенной диете. Ведение медицинской документации . Сдача дежурства по палатам у постели больных. Обеспечение строгого учёта и хранения лекарств группы А и Б в специальных шкафах.
