Разрабатывает перспективные планы модернизации постановочного освещения. Составляет и производит светомонтировку мероприятия с использованием необходимых технических средств. Разрабатывает световые эффекты. Осуществляет световые репетиции проводимых мероприятий с фиксацией установленного художественного освещения на партитурах. Производит профилактику светового оборудования не реже одного раза в квартал. Следит за исправностью вверенной ему аппаратуры.

На должность художника по свету назначается лицо, имеющее высшее художественное образование без предъявления требований к стажу работы или среднее и стаж работы по профилю не менее пяти лет.
