Управление техникой. Машинист ведёт дорожно-транспортные машины (бульдозеры, автогрейдеры, катки, экскаваторы другую спецтехнику) при решении практических задач: планировка площадок, профилирование трасс и дорог, перемещение грунтов и сыпучих материалов, укатка дорожного полотна, передвижка железнодорожных путей, рыхление горной массы. При этом он работает как с основным, так и со сменным навесным оборудованием. Техническое обслуживание. Регулярный осмотр и проверка состояния машины перед сменой. Также машинист заправляет технику горюче-смазочными материалами (ГСМ) и смазывает узлы, детали, а также элементы навесного и прицепного оборудования. Выявление и устранение неполадок. В процессе работы специалист отслеживает сбои в работе механизмов и механизмов, а при необходимости самостоятельно их устраняет. Участие в ремонте. Помимо мелкого обслуживания, машинист привлекается к более серьёзным видам ремонта обслуживаемого оборудования. Приёмка и сдача смены. В обязанности часто входит приёмка рабочего места, инструментов и приспособлений, их содержание в надлежащем порядке, а также ведение установленной технической документации (например, заполнение журналов, оформление приёмо-сдаточных актов).

Прохождение обязательных медицинских осмотров Обучение и инструктажи по охране труда Знания: устройство и технические характеристики машины, навесного оборудования и приспособлений; правила монтажа и демонтажа навесного оборудования, принцип его работы и систему управления; системы смазки, питания и охлаждения двигателей внутреннего сгорания; предельную нагрузку на оборудование; правила дорожного движения (если машина выезжает на дороги общего пользования); допустимые углы спуска и подъёма машины; виды работ, которые выполняет машина, порядок и способы их выполнения; технические требования к материалам, используемым при устройстве дорог и площадок; марки и нормы расхода горючих и смазочных материалов; способы выявления и устранения неисправностей; схемы и периодичность смазки узлов и деталей; порядок оформления приёмо-сдаточных документов на выполненные работы; слесарное дело.
